F31 340i Fuel details over 26k

Hi All,

Just looking through my Excel spreadsheet for fuel costs & usage since new. My car is an F31 340i with MPPSK. I've covered just over 26k miles in the car (from new) with it coming up to 3 years old next month. So, to the numbers:

Fuel used = Shell V-Power for every single fill.
Total fuel put into the car = 3610.67L
Total cost = £4,768.27
Average £/l = £1.322
Average mpg = 32.66mpg
Average fill qty = 48.10L
Best tank-to-tank =39.55mpg
Worst tank-to-tank = 28.36mpg

Interesting figures, although almost £5k in fuel is a bit of an eye-opener...

When you sit down and work it out it can be an eye opener!

When i had my X5 3.0d it used to get 30mpg on average but one winter i fitted winter wheels and insta turbo tyres (like offroad tyres) the mpg drooped to 20mpg, i go lazy and didnt put the summer wheels back on but over 10k im sure i worked out the "extra" fuel the tyres had cost me and i was rather taken back! lol

Having just sold a golf r which gave me 20mpg across 6 months in favour of the same car as you, these are very good figures tbh. I am quite surprised as I thought it would be low 20s.

Do BMW recommend putting V power in the 340i or was that your choice?

Clearly depends on how and where you drive but I'd say an average of almost 33mpg from an F31 340i is pretty decent and entirely believable. By way of comparison my F31 335d has averaged 38mpg over 70k miles so it's better but (IMHO) not by enough to justify choosing diesel over petrol if fuel economy and range are the main criteria. Obviously a different matter if having X-Drive's the priority......

Buy the performance engine and put the cheaper fuel in it is a bit weird for me, that aside he has the MPPSK installed, not sure if it required 98ron+ or not, but asking more from the engine and not giving it the fuel it needs again seems weird why you wouldn't.

On a run il get 40mpg out of mine (did get 44mpg over 530 miles of motorway!)

Mine has settled down at 23mpg, i dont baby it, and in comparison my 335d settled at 29mpg, would like to say the driving style was much the same, with not much long distance runs only about 10 miles to town, then the rest in town.

It is scary to look at sometimes.
I've only tracked mine over the last 4k miles. (Since September 2018)
But in that time I have spent £994.72 over 4071 miles.
Average is 25.8MPG
The best being 32.5 and worst being 19.6
Average Price per Litre: £1.30
Average Price per mile: £0.228

I agree with you, but I would like to know if in the manual BMW recommend higher octane for it.

Hi Grant. Your post takes me back to summer/autumn 2016, when a number of us were tracking the build and delivery status of our 340is.

Anyway, here are my stats according to Fuelly. These are for an F31 340i with the standard exhaust and a diet of the cheapest fuel I could find

24,409 miles
Average mpg: 31.5
Best tank: 35.29mpg
Worst tank: 23.51mpg
Total cost: £4235

My new M140i is already up to 32.3mpg over 2K miles - but then the power-to-weight ratio is better.

With the MPPSK upgrade, BMW recommends higher octane fuel, but it seems to work fine even on the cheapest, lowest octane stuff adulterated with bio ethanol (all I could get at one place in France)

Insa Turbo tyres are good for offroading but by god they are awful on the road

So to summarise, the 40i is a fairly cheap car to run

I vow never to work such things out as I might depress myself with the costs and revert to 1.1 Fiesta Popular.

Thats pretty good

On the number of fills on the old 330d per month (3) and pro rata over 36 months I got to £7k of fuel ... Jeez!!

Still it's better than the old Cayenne with the 100 litre tank, that only did 19mpg.... definitely not going to work that one out !

Am guessing the mode you're in makes a (excluding motorway cruising) big difference. I've done bang on 2000 miles (all with Shell V Power) in two months of ownership, 99% in sport mode and my mpg average says 18.3.

I'm currently getting around 20.7mpg on my 328i, which is cack. But it is all short local drives.

Will see how well she performs on a longer run this weekend as I'm doing a 500 mile round trip from Middlesex to Lancashire and back.

Hmmm, I don't drive like an angel, 70% motorway but smart (yeah right) motorway. The occasional toe plant stick to the left in S+. I'm averaging 40, 335D. Looks as though I should drive harder

I've had mine since June, and done just over 2200 miles.

It's varied between 22.5mpg to best 34.7 mpg.
It's funny when you drive in a "spirited" way the average drops very noticeable as you drive 😁

Here's mine over the past 10,100 miles (practically no urban and decent length journeys elevate it):

Best tank 39.2
Worst tank 33.6
Average 36.0

Run on a diet of V Power and Tesco Momentum 99. Total cost £1,730.

i find (might seem rather obvious but i did find it surprising) that the mpg in urban drops by 40-50%.

81 in the variable, 85 in the non-variable, car does 38mpg average, a journey of 115 miles, with 10% of it urban.
I think its respectable - the 2.0 turbo in the Type R does about 42mpg motorway only.

On short commute trips in stop start city traffic over 5 miles, 21-25mpg.

I ran V power for over a year but switched to Momentum 99, i feel no difference between either so sticking with Tesco, the money saved can buy a 4 pack of chocolate muffins once a month.
