I haven't seen any shift in Government policy which would make the slightest difference to the used value of diesels. Fuel duty unchanged and VED unchanged for existing cars.

I have seen a fair bit of media speculation leading up to the Budget, all of which turned out to be bollocks, which didn't come as too much of a shock to some of us.

Welcome to the 335d club
This. I own a 2014 Euro V 330D and I am currently paying less tax and for fuel than if I bought a new or 1 year old 340i (or even a well specced 330i).

Not much incentive to change the car to be honest at the minute as it will cost me way more than today (monthlies, fuel, tax, insurance, the lot!)

That isn't true as far as I can see.

Cars registered after 1/4/2018 will see their first year rate move up by one band so the cost of this will be £300 in total for a car like a 335d, and in fact that just equalises the situation so a new 340i will pay the same VED as a 335d.

Cars registered before 1/4/2018 are unaffected, so there is zero impact on existing cars

What changed in November 2017 for new diesel cars?
In the Autumn 2017 budget the Chancellor announced an increase in the first year VED rate for new diesel cars first registered after 1 April 2018.

The emissions test that Euro 6 diesel cars have to pass before they're approved for sale includes a more demanding, on-road 'Real Driving Emissions (RDE)' test from September 2017. This test is set to become even more stringent from January 2020 when 'RDE step 2' comes into force.

The CO2-based first year VED rate for new diesel cars first registered after 1 April 2018 will be one band higher than shown in the table unless the car was approved to the RDE step 2 standard.

That was part of the argument against it. An incentive for people to stay in their old diesels longer, which is surely totally against what they are trying to achieve?

The Budget treatment of diesel cars was politically-motivated, and that's not too surprising with a wafer-thin majority and 11 million odd diesel cars on UK roads.

It would take a very brave Chancellor to try and tax older diesel cars off the road - something that Corbyn and his merry band of populists would no doubt seize upon as a tax on the poor. I can picture the Daily Mirror featuring a nurse who is now unable to drive to the soup kitchen. They could have brought in a scrappage scheme for say 12+ year old petrol and diesel cars, but that would be expensive.

Hence the very modest change which applies to new diesels from April 2018 only.

Not sure many understand the latest tax move. The motor industry can't see how it gives any incentive to ditch older diesels.

Plus the automatic tax band adjustment for new diesels, "unless" the diesel complies with the latest interpretation of the official test. Which no new diesel can be tested against, as it is not yet in force.

The first new models are only recently starting to go through WLTC RDE Step 1, ready for the September 2018 deadline. RDE Step 2 is still future.

I'm glad I bailed out of my 435d earlier this year. 25% wiped of used diesel prices since the summer. Roll on M240.

I don't have access to the trade guides but WBAC are now bidding more for my car than they were in the summer.

How much did you sell the 435d for and what age is it?

That does sound like an excellent sale price if it was a stand alone trade!

Would a similar aged car, i.e. a May 16 435d with a similar spec sell for just £21,750 today though?

That was just handing it back to the dealer so to speak. They fronted it for £32.5 and sold it a week later. Don't know how much for.

Well i for one am very very happy i did not jump on the band wagon like most a ditch my Diesel. Its the best car for the motorway miles that i do, simple. Deep down i bet a lot of you who jumped ship now regret it, especially with the running costs, allthough you would never admit it. Its difficult for a man to admit that they were wrong. well thats what the wife tells me!

I can't see how buying a 340i would be a good move to myself

Less grip driving around and the way I chuck cars around I'd prob loose the back end in no time.

I also do about 15-17k per year, my 335d only averages 30 mpg with my heavy foot and mixed roads / mixed driving. A 340i would do way less thAN 30mpg with me.

Mine appears to be similar unless I am deluding myself. My car was worth £20k ish early this year and about £18k now for a private sale I think.

Still makes no sense to sell it when it does everything so well and will probably just drop another £7k over the next 3.5 years.

Just because VAG are fudging co2 doesn't mean diesels are bad.

It just means VAG will get shafted again.

I own my 330D outright so it would take an increase in diesel tax of more than £500 per month for already registered vehicles, i.e. funding a new car, before I'd see see any reason to buy a petrol.

Yeh if i stay at my current job. If i moved to a job which was just a few miles away i'd prob have an RS3, but then i'd be scared of it getting stolen every night so....

Err... No... but then I'm not one of those who says that one is definitively better than the other. My F31 330D was a great car. My F36 440i is a great car.
I moved to petrol because the timing was right - enough equity still in the car to get a good sale price, was driving a Euro V version diesel in London with uncertainty around the corner, am doing less miles p.a. etc
As far as I can see, there are just as many folks justifying why they are sticking with diesel in the current climate as there are those exalting the joys of having moved to petrol
