Confused about CarPlay
Hi all,
Long time laker, first time posting! So I recently leased a 2018 430i, which included professional nav. I was under the impression I could add CarPlay via connected drive store, but unfortunately it's not appearing as option (only concierge services). Is there anything I or someone else can do to get CarPlay to work? Is there any coding that can be done to get the car to get it to show? Thanks. |

you needed to option the car with Nav AND wifi/wireless charging. This feature adds the wifi signal in the car which enables the option to download CarPlay.
Any specific reason you're wanting CarPlay? iDrive 6.0 works pretty good, especially the new voice command, and does almost everything CarPlay can do. I'm a product specialist (BMW Genius) at a dealership and still can't find a reason anyone would want CarPlay... |

Thanks for the fast response. I see, I don't have wireless charging or wifi. I use Apple Music, so easier (I assume) to use CarPlay for music... Can wifi be retroactively fitted?
On another note, my Telephone and Media software versions are currently TB-005.012.001. Is there a more recent update (nothing appears when checking at BMW site for upgrades) (I think it might be 6-something)? |

No problem. Yeah you are right, Apple Music definitely works a little better with CarPlay, especially if your listening to PodCasts.
I think BimmerTech has a solution to this, but not too sure. I think the most recent Tele/Media is TB-.006.006.006. I'd have to double check at work tomorrow. |

Problem streaming music from iPhone using iDrive
Just picked up a 2018 530 Xi sedan. I am having a lot of issues streaming music from my iPhone SE (with up to date 11.2.6 software version). The device connects without a problem but when using the iDrive to switch tracks to a new song (while one is already playing), the new song begins, but then stops after about 10 seconds and then plays from the beginning again. This happens two or three times and then the phone defaults to the very first song (determined alphabetically by song name, not artist or album) on my iPhone. This doesn't happen every time but often enough to be very annoying. Also, album artwork and artist/album/song names are very slow to load on the iDrive interface. I have hard rebooted the phone, deleted the device from iDrive and reestablished the connection, etc. Nothing works. Local BMW dealership support is useless. I used the exact same phone (and software version) on the 2014 BMW 528Xi I turned in to get my new one and it worked perfectly. No issues.
Has anybody experienced this problem or have any ideas? Thanks |

I was wondering the same thing about my 2018 330i, until today. Just screwing around with the hands free system and with an Android phone attached, I said "start Car Play" and the car responded that the feature was not available at this time. When I opened up the Connected website, it was now available to purchase. Prior to this, only concierge services were available to purchase.

CarPlay is pretty useless. And not well integrated. Have tried using it couple of times but it only annoys me without no value added.

I have CarPlay and the Head Up Display (HUD). Speed, speed limit, BMW Navigation Phone and Media are displayed on the HUD. Also, you can control most function directly from the steering wheel. However, with CarPlay, you loose the integration with the steering wheel and HUD. The NAV screen is the only display and with iDrive knob you have scroll/click though the icons and options. The interface to CarPlay is rather clumsy. Also. Apple Maps is poor. Luckily, as of yesterday, you can now use Google Maps if you have the latest iOS 12.

The problem is BMW, NOT Apple. Apple CarPlay can be a great product, except when a vehicle manufacturer screws it up.
It drives me absolutely crazy that Hyundai and Chevrolet can program better CarPlay integration than BMW can manage to build. Get a rental car with CarPlay sometime -- you'll be blown away by how much better it is than a BMW with all its CarPlay bugs. Examples: * On BMW, be listening to FM or Satellite radio and get a text message. Listen to it in CarPlay, and the car will default back to CarPlay audio instead of going back to satellite or FM radio. Both Chevrolet Hyundai cars that I've rented have no such issue. * BMW doesn't show CarPlay Apple Maps directions on heads up display. Why??? * Make a phone call through CarPlay in a BMW, and half the time audio won't resume playing after the phone call. Again, no such issue on both the Chevrolet and Hyundai cars that I've rented. On top of this, iDrive integration with an iPhone is painful with random USB disconnects and as previous posters noted issues where songs stop playing, go back to the first track, or other issues. Again, in rental vehicles, I've never had these kinds of issues. It just seems like BMW hires a bunch of 14 year old kids to program their iDrive systems. They then seem to release the product at beta 1 and never bother updating it again or fixing any of the bugs. Where other car manufacturers appear to actually take the time to beta test their code and fix problems that crop up. |

I'd agree though, I've driven Chryslers/Jeeps with CarPlay and they have worked far better. I'd even break a cardinal rule of mine and say it works better with a touch screen than the rotary controller. |

In non-CarPlay mode, I can see my contacts on the HUD, scroll using the steering thumbwheel, select, place the call and hangup. All can be done on the steering wheel and the HUD. Is it different in the 2017? Yes, I can skip or go back for songs in my playlist While using Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze Maps for navigation, I loose the prompts, highway lane information, highway exits and intersection info on the HUD. There are no CarPlay navigation integration with the HUD. Last edited by montr; 09-28-2018 at 07:45 PM.. |

I never really thought about the navigation issues. I think it's because Ive always used the BMW navigation with the sound off instead of Apple maps and then had Waze in the background for the alerts. Since iOS12 I haven't really had to use Waze other than having it up for the alerts with no directions. I'll have to see if my method still gives me the HUD from BMW nav.
