Tuned Cars and Canadian Gas

Hey guys,

Ever since flashing to bm3 stage 1 91 and the TCU flash, I've noticed my N20 become more sensitive to gas quality. I filled up with Costco 91 with a little leftover Chevron 94 and my logs showed really bad timing and 4 knock events in one particular pull in 3rd. Timing retard was the worst at 6500rpm and up.

Question for the guys with tuned cars, where do you get gas that minimizes timing issues for your tunes?

Shell 91 is tried & true the best gas you can get at the pump here. No ethanol content which is good, keeps our motors happy. Husky 94 & Petro Canada 94 are also comparable, although they contain ethanol.

Lots of people say that Costco gas is the same as every other stations', & that it all comes from the same place. Who really knows.

Personally, I would rather spend the extra $1 or $2 per fill up at Shell for the peace of mind, so I do.

Chevron 94 seems to be the best here. No ethanol. Price is comparable to shell 91 as well. I had some timing issues on shell 92 from washington... I'm on the ACN map now and all seems well...

I am running MHD stage 2 with catless DP. Was on the stage 2 93 octane map running mostly Petro 94. Getting lots of timing corrections. Was worse when I ran Husky 94. Car was slow with both. Switched to stage 2 91 map with Petro 94. Had less corrections and car was much faster.
I ran a 12.55 at 110mph on my dragy with DA of 7400ft on the stage 2 91 map. On 93 map I was running mid 13s just over 100 mph. Have also run shell 91 on the 91 map and I don't notice a difference. Have not logged or dragy'd with shell though.

I noticed on the Shell pump I filled up at this week that it says my contain up to 10% ethanol.

V Power contains no ethanol in Canada, the remaining gas pool (regular, mid grade) has ethanol to meet the blend mandate.

I tuned BM3 stage 2 91 on shell 91 and it was pulling timing. I put in petro 94 but seem to have the same issue so I’m going to run the tune for a bit and see if adaptations help. I’d like to run stage 2 93 but I think the gas here in canada( or at least Ontario) isn’t very good.

Shell 91 and Chevron 94 pull timing for me out in BC which I believe has the worst gas in the country. I've introduced Boostane to the mix and the improvement has been pretty remarkable.

Not sure how I feel about it being a long term fix though

This is an irritating issue. I don’t want to use octane booster for any length of time either. Makes me wish I had of kept my dinan Sport tune and stayed in ignorance.

I just got back to BC from Calgary. In Calgary I filled with Petro 94, did a few runs with my draggy and ran 0-60 in 4.43 and 1/4mile in 12.9@107.7 in a 100% stock 340. Now back in BC and filled with Chevron 94 which I thought would be better as it has a huge "no ethanol" sticker on the pump, and I cant get the car to run less than a 5 second 0-60. The DA in Calgary was 10,800ft. It was 4670ft when I tested it here in Kelowna. Is there really no good gas in BC?

Not much I try to follow the formula on their site. I will get about 6-7 tanks on one 32oz bottle treating "91" octane to get to "94".

If I have access to Petro 94, I put 94 regardless of Shell, ethanol being bad for the car is a myth for our engines, obviously if you only have 91, then go with Shell as it offers better fuel economy over ethanol fuels. If you run shell 91 on a 93 tune, you will pull a serious amount of timing, run Petro 94 if you have access.

I've had a 435 FBO with custom map 6 on jb4 pushing a bit more than map 2, with the 94 octane at petro Canada in Quebec, and a 340i FBO at 94 too and everything was running really good! As Chau mention, best is to get 94 at petro. Screw the ethanol myths

I wish we had Petro 94 in BC. We truly have the worst gas here. Chevron 94 is the only 94 available and it pulls timing on my 91 Oct tune like crazy.

Buy the 32oz boostane professional bottles, they're around 50$ CADish and they'll last around 6 full tanks. you only need about 6oz per 16gals (60liters) to make around 95oct.
