Break-in confusion

Hey everyone, when I took delivery of my 2018 340xi, the delivery coordinator that walked me through the car told me that because I have both of the M Performance Packages, the first 2000km was the break-in period, during which I should not exceed 4500rpm and no faster than 160km/h, and that after I passed 2000km, I should bring it back for an oil change.

Well, I made the appointment last week and showed up at my dealership today and when I got to the service desk, they looked and said I came in for nothing because they don't do oil changes that early, and that there is no "break-in" period for a non-M car. So now I'm confused - who's telling me the truth here?

You should have gone back to the delivery coordinator and got to the bottom of it. The break in for your car would be in your manual. Mine says:

Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km do not exceed the maximum engine and road
speed: 4,500 rpm and 100 mph/160 km/h.
Avoid full load or kickdown under all circumstances.
From 1,200 miles/2,000 km the engine and vehicle speed can gradually be
increased.

AFAIK there's no recommendation for an oil change before the usual 12mo./10k mile interval, but consider having one done at 3k to 5k anyway, at your own expense. At the very least change the filter. I change my oil once a year, my filter twice a year.

Thanks Billfitz, I'll take your advice and do the oil change when I get a couple more K's on. Cheers!

BMW hasn't done break-in oil changes for non-M cars in years.

Sounds like the delivery coordinator misspoke.
