B58 40i - who's using BootMod3?

It might be a bit of lockdown boredom, but tempted to use BootMod3 on the 340i. It's already got the MPPSK, so usefully quick with 350ish BHP, but like many, more power is usually good!

The B58 engine seems pretty robust, and I'm out of warranty soon.

Interested to hear from 340/440 owners who've gone down this route, especially anyone who's gone for it from the MPPSK, or had had their car on a dyno.

Never used BootMod3 but those cars can make up to 440bhp from a decent remap I believe, so if it can get anywhere near that it should be a bit of a beast

Agreed, for me half the fun of a new purchase is doing the research first!

Best to read on the M forums, Bootmod3 is very popular on the M engines, particularly in the US.

I am interested as well out of warranty in a few weeks. Can’t decide whether to extend the warranty or map. The few issues of cylinder scoring is the thing playing on my mind, appreciate it is not common but a new engine doesn’t sound fun.

I'm running stage 2 now and it kicks like a mule. Indecently quick, especially in SWB 2 series form.

I'll be in the same boat in December (no more warranty) and I'm thinking of going BM3 route.

i made the switch Mppsk to BM3 stage 1,last update 2.1 it's a night and day difference. Feels like 60-70hp more then mppsk. Car is pretty fast from low rpm and the best part is improved power delivery and smoothness on Sport and Sport+.

That's good to hear. Going from standard car to BM3 stage 1 must feel incredible then!

Flashed it this afternoon. Between the XHP and the BM3 the car has so much get up a go. Comfort mode used to feel a bit lazy, whereas now it just flies without effort.

Very impressed!

Already?! Did you already have the Bootmod3 hardware?

A friend had already put together the WiFi agent for me, and I had the OBD cable anyway.
Once you've got that stuff it takes minutes.

Day 2, have you had a play with exhaust burble settings yet?

I'd love to hear 'GTS roar' on the MPPSK exhaust. I'm sure the neighbours wouldn't. Good job it only works when the engine is warm.

No, just been out in the M4 this morning... it's still the Daddy!

Going for a walk later over near Wendover so a nice run to try the 340 again. I'm actually not that fussed about the burbles, and don't want the exhaust noisier. I'm actually not all that impressed with the MPE to be honest, though I'm wondering if it was put back together as well as it should have been after the rear ARB was replaced... seems to be a little bit of drone since then.

How much is it all in with all the hardware you need?

Hardware wise, you only need a windows laptop and an enet/OBD cable.

Prices for software are on the Protuning freaks website. https://www.protuningfreaks.com/

The WiFi box is optional, but is very handy.

The app is free, an E-sys cable is maybe £20-30 I think (had one from years ago). The WiFi agent cost £70 in parts. The license itself was £450 via Tom Wrigley performance.

It must have quite a bit more power than before as even Mrs Tengocity could tell it's been modified and she usually swears she can't tell any difference after I've modified a car!
