Did a 4 hour round trip to Birmingham to pick up a set of alloys for my first car - hadn't checked the fitment or specs (tbh I wouldn't have even had known).

I did the blue led side light thing for a little while :P. Also going from Slough to Brent Cross in ~30 mins along the A40 (long before the average speed cameras were introduced).

The Vmax from my first car would not have even triggered a NIP from a camera van on a Dual Carriageway... A 1,100cc transverse 4 pot fed from a single choke carb that pumped out a meaty 45 BHP (as EVO might put it)...

Would really love to have one now in mint condition as a runaround... a 1982 Golf C... Mars Red... But the ones I have seen for sale are in shocking condition...

Overtaking things on the A9.

Those were the days
Funnily enough what I had in mind for this was on the A9. Managed the outskirts of Edinburgh many years ago in an old Vectra ST200 to the Kessock Bridge in 1h45. Well before the days of average speed cameras, and no real police presence on the road either. That car was always at its best at higher speeds, until I put the lower final drive in it you could hit 115mph in 3rd! Sadly you're lucky to do that journey in 2h45 now no matter what the traffic. Gatwick to Edinburgh in just over five hours was good going too. God, the things we used to do when we were younger!

Changing headhunits used to be commonplace but how many people do it regularly now?

Actually that's a good one.. Carrying round the actual head unit so no one nicked it then upgrading to one's where the front just popped off!..

Had the original Pioneer CD system in an Escort III in the late '80's, it was a transport only in the dash with a thick umbilical cord to a shoebox sized DAC. They just hadn't miniaturised the electronics at that time.

Changed head units (and much more) on everything I had up to an RS4 where integration (both cosmetic and electrical) became too bespoke and improvements in sound quality at that end were minimal. In essence, you lost more (looks and control integration) than you gained in doing any change.
Still persisted in upgrades of amplification, speakers and installing Audyssey sound equalisation however.

My current car with a HK system is the first I have not made any changes to in over three decades. Not because it's perfect, but too awkward to change for the minimal gains.
