So I picked up this car about a week ago and today I dropped it off at my local dealership (Thompson BMW, Doylestown, PA) to install the Dinan Stage 1 v2. Tune.

I realize that there may be other tunes that create more HP/Tqe but I like the support that I get from my local dealer and the warranty. I've had Dinan on my previous/current BMW's with never an issue.

Although I didn't get to spend to much time in the car experiencing the Tune, my initial impressions are that the tune drastically improves throttle response and turbo lag in all settings (comfort-sport+).

In comfort there doesn't seem to be a difference from stock except when you really get on the throttle and then you really notice it. In Sports+ omg the difference is night and day. It really hits hard ion each gear.

Excited to drive the car more and really experience the difference.

I'm sharing this as I hope that other Forum members who are looking for Tune options now have a better idea of what to expect with the Dinan Tune.

Dinan makes great stuff for the people that want something mild, from a good company, and want to retain a warranty. Good review

I actually really like Thompson. I've been going there for 8 years and they do amazing performance work. They service all my BMW's.

Maybe, but many of my friends who get their car serviced there have had a good experiences as well. After 8 years, I don't think luck is the answer. I've been to other dealerships in the area and I have to say I feel really lucky!

Who have you worked with in Service? That could be your issue.

In terms of the Tune, all good so far. Plan to really drive it tomorrow.

Is Thompson tune friendly? I have BM3 and have to have my 320i serviced soon. I hear some dealerships are a bitch with tunes. I think my warranty is up in March, but I don't wanna void it if anything gets fucky. I follow Thompson on Instagram and live around Abington, so that would make things nice.

Thompson has something unique. They have their regular service department and then they have Thompson Performance group. It's a separate desk that handles performance upgrades (Tune, Turbo upgrades, CP, exhausts, suspension, wheels etc.)

They built my prior FBO 135i (Dinan Stage 3, DP, Dinan inter cooler, Dinan Oil cooler, KW Coil overs, HRE WHEELS etc.) and my current F80 M3 ZCP (KW Coil overs, HRE's, Akrapovic Exhaust etc.)

I would call Laura at Thompson Performance Group and have a conversation with her.

Congrats. My colleague really likes Thompson too and has used them for a longtime.

What was the cost installed? You can PM me if you feel more comfortable.

I've used BMW Mainline/ Devon/ Ottos and can give positive and negatives for all of them...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have the same vehicle and the Dinan tune.
I'm also pleased with this tune. I have V1. I spoke with Dinan after V2 was released, inquiring about the changes. We didn't go into extensive details, but he concluded that V1 is slightly stronger, but V2 has changes to improve the long term reliability.

I'm curious how much non-linear pull you experience when pushing it? By this, I'm referring to the stairstep boost/pull you appreciate when accelerating at moderate-to-full open throttle.

Glad you like the tune. I’m getting the stage 1 v2 for my 440i next week. I’ve only been to Thompson once but Laura is great to deal with and have nothing but good things to say about them.

I hear good things about Stage 1 v2 on the 40 platform. Yeah, Laura and the Thompson Performance Group are great. This will be the third build they do for me.

They did an MPPSK on my 340i which I believe I went with them because I had reached out to you last year and you had good things to say! They're doing the stage 1 and dinan springs for now.

OP: If you don't mind saying, how much was the tune installed?

I'm glad to hear the improvement. I'm not dissatisfied with the power in my F31 but the lag drives me nuts more often than a BMW should.

Finally got my car back. Poor Laura was struggling with the shockware install as my car is one of the very few that refuses to flash properly. Regardless, the tune is flawless and extremely smooth. The dinan springs have transformed the handling.

Great to hear, I can't wait to install the KW street Coil overs on in the spring to improve the handling of the F31.

I had a Dinantronics Elite Version 1 installed in my 2017 330xi for about 8 months and Dinan just switched it to the version 2 model after I started getting random CELs during ignition. (apparently the v1 can sometimes send data while the engine is off causing CELs on startup)

The non-linear boost was very noticeable to me on the v1 during aggressive throttle, but I happily accepted it over the stock performance. The v2 doesn't produce the stepping during boost at all. If I didn't know better I'd say there's no tuner installed (if it weren't for the noticeable torque increase)

I have no proof, but it almost feels like the v2 is putting out a little less torque. But it might just be fooling me due to the overall refined acceleration and smoothness during boosting. I've never had a dyno done at any point, so no numbers unfortunately.

The v2 has fewer connection points. The v1 connected to the Intake Camshaft Position Sensor, Manifold Pressure Sensor, Charge Pipe Pressure Sensor, and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. The v2 connects to Charge Pipe Pressure Sensor and the Manifold Pressure Sensor. This makes me wonder if some of the smoothness in v2 is due to just letting BMW's ECU make the necessary adjustments instead of trying to control everything? But I'm not an engineer, so all I can do is wonder.

Thank you for sharing your insight. Overall, I'm pleased with the tune, but the non-linear aspect is quite noticeable. As you noted, Dinan did indicate that V2 was slightly less powerful than V1. Being that they match the warranty, I'm not inclined to electively change tunes at this time. I'm hoping they offer additional aftermarket options for the B46/B48. I suspect an intake is coming soon.

OP how's the tune now that you got some seat time? Mine had a lot of shift lag the first hundred miles but seems to have mostly smoothed out.
