So running power to the airbag pins still wount Work with wrong szl? And if u buy correct szl u don’t have to, so what’s the point? I’m confused. I thought I don’t need to buy new szl if I run power to the unused pins. Anyone clear that up for me?

I was told there are parts inside the steering column switch that allows the heated function to be programmed to the car. If you don't have the right one with these parts it will not work.

Even with the correct on you still need to run a power and a negative to the switch from the front FEM and to a power point if your car is not pre wired.

Running power to the airbag pins wouldn't work for me because the SZL didn't support the heating function even though there is a socket on the rear of the SZL for the heater switch. My replacement SZL had the power pins in the correct location and I already had the power cables in the connector that fits into the back of the SZL, so there was no need to use the airbag pins. My car is an F30 LCI.

I think other people who have the retrofit didn't have power at the back of the SZL, but had SZL which supported heating function. If you read the first post it tells you which SZL supports heating - mine was 61319351140 which does not.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I was under the impression if u technically didn’t have the rite szl u can run power to the pins but I was wrong. That sux bc I most likely now need a new szl too. Smh

I have completely read this manual. And still do not understand how is it done?
How do I get the voltage from pin 9 and 11 on the back to the front Pin 1 and Pin 3 of the airbag connector?
Which SZL are suitable for this type of conversion is also unclear! Because according to the first page David51 has made this conversion with SZL PN 61319253751. But this SZL has no steering wheel heating!
My SZL has PN 61319351153 and according to the catalog has the same functions as 61319253751
Can someone who did that properly describe how to get the voltage on pin 1 and pin3? Step by step describtion

Pins 1 & 3 of the driver facing SZL airbag connector are already connected the rear pins 9 & 11 in all cases via the internal clock spring wires.

This is nothing to do with steering wheel heating function it is a spare connection for some reason on the airbag connector so you can use this to get power to the wheel front to use for the heater controller.

Many thanks for the help. Now I understand almost everything.
If I measure with Multimeter, then slot 1 and slot 9 should have a connection? Just like slot 3 and slot 11!
Is the voltage at pin 11 and 9 always there or only after coding Option 248?

It is only a simple conductive link (rear 9 to front 1 and rear 11 to front 3)

Supply - No, if you don't have heating or vibrate functions then there will be no factory wires connected to rear 9 & 11 to bring in the supply. That is when you need to add your own supply to 9 & 11 (by wiring to it from either FEM or as I did from the armrest cigar lighter supply). It will then be passed through the SZL to the airbag connector where you can pick it up for the heater control module.

I have already looked at my car. And I have found that I have already installed the wires of rear 9 & 11 to FEM. Unfortunately, I can not insert photos of my A83*1B plug here to show it.
That's why I asked if the voltage is already applied to these wires? Or only after coding S248A? I have not measured with Multimeter.
But I doubt that already the wire of rear 9&11 to airbag plug 1&3 is installed, because I have no option 248. Is the connection passed through the SZL (from rear to front) on all models SZLs? Or only on cars with heating funktion?

Sorry, I am getting confused by your confusion!! Its 1.5 years since I did this.

A83*1B 9 & 11 are the supply points to the SZL for heating and vibrate, they are nothing to do with the airbag connector. Do you have vibrate on your wheel already?

If you have wires in 9 & 11 this suggests you have vibrate or heating already? You need to check with a voltmeter or else we are pissing in the wind as they say.

Do you have pins fitted in front connector A83*4B pins 1 & 4?

No my car has no steering wheel heating and no vibrate.
But as I understood from first post, I need there on the A83*1B Supply so that the front of the airbag plug everything works or?

I have (-) wire from A173*7B (10) to A83*1B (11) and
(+) wire from Z7*5B (1/F45) to A83*1B (9)
That's 100%. I have a photo but I do not know how to upload this photo here.
And at the plug A83*4B I have no pins otherwise I would have no problem with supply of steering wheel electronics ECU.

If you read my post above this is exactly what I had, wires already at A83 but no factory vibrate or heat - maybe the wires have been included on LCI cars. I needed a new SZL, so got the correct one for heating this meant I didn't need to use the airbag pins.

I was about to post that a UK member had this same issue with supply wires fitted but no factory heat or vibrate - but he beat me to it!

See Hawko post above.

Pilot-Oldenburg I think you have the same, so you have the supply ready, but you need a new SZL to get the function and the wheel side supply pins, then you are good to go with out any "home made" connections.

interestingly the top one comes up under normal parts like this:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...08#61317468009

but the bottom one with wiring comes up as mod part:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...66#61317849393

I can only assume the safest option is to get the mod one, 61317849393

Hi, thinking about doing this retrofit and have a question.
The control unit has 2 connections with white surrounds, the 2 pin goes to the lane departure and the 4 pin goes to the heater pad, the steering I've seen only has 2 pins coming out of the heater pad, is this the right steering wheel ? If so, what are the 2 other pins from the control unit for ?
Thanks in advance.
