More Octane
I'm running BM3 Stage 2+ on 93 oct gas w/TU HPFP, but need a bit more octane to smooth it out. Is there harm in throwing a gallon of e85 to boost octane, or is there a better way of going about it?
On a side note, for those of you running e30 mixes, do you reflash to a 93 oct tune every couple tanks to run a full tank of premium through the system, then fill and flash back to e30? It seems like an awful lot of retuning to run like that constantly.

If you still have that AA catted downpipe in your signature then adding ethanol can damage your catalytic converter over time theoretically, but I'm not sure if E30 is enough ethanol to lead to that.

Interesting info. Thanks for the link!! I do but I'm just at the factory standard oil so I don't think it would be a problem. I believe others on the forum are running e30 w/cats. I guess time will tell......

From my understanding, E85 has an octane rating from 100-110. That being said, if you mix 2.1 gallons of True E85 or 100 octane race gas to 5.8 gallons of 93 that contains 10% E85, you'll end up with either an E30 mix that is rated for 94.9-97.5 octane or a 94.9 octane race fuel mix. The e85 will be cheaper, but you'll have to test it, you *might* strain both your HPFP and cat if you go over an e30 mix. The 100 octane race gas will be considerably more expensive but it will be consistently 100 octane. You also will not strain your hpfp too. |

I did an E30 mix today. Found a Shell near me that had E85. Tested it at E65, so 6 gal of that and the rest at 93 (tested also directly at E10) and flashed to an E30 tune.
Car sounds different. Quieter when cruising, barks a lot more at WOT. Power builds like I upgraded the turbo! Going to burn through a quarter of the tank then log it to see where it's at. Certainly feels and sounds smooth! Race GAS is $7/gal for Sunoco Standard. $8.50 for Sunoco GT260 and it's not available everywhere, so an ethanol blend works better for me. Can't wait for the flex fuel sensor. N55 guys had their day in the sun today! |

From the other engines/builds it is a flex fuel sensor with a canbus integration module. There are a bunch of options available.

That's a bargain. I think that's the same price as gasoline in the East Coast a few days ago…

A little different question than the OP, but close enough, so I'll use this thread.
I'm running a MHD stage 2 93 octane map and CTS 200 cell cat. I use only 'top tier' 93 octane fuel. The car seems to run fine, but I haven't data logged to check timing. I don't want to replace the HPFP or run an E30 map. I'm wondering: Would there would be any benefit or downside to putting in 2 gallons of E85 before filling the remainder of the 13 gallon tank with 93 octane gasoline? That would be approximately a 1:6.5 ratio of E85 to 93 octane (~E20?) on a 93 octane map. Good? Bad? Neither?

I was just wondering if there's any benefit/downside to adding a couple of gallons of E85 to my 13 gallon tank of 93 octane, while running the MHD stage 2, 93 octane map.

There are stage 1 and 2 E30 maps that don't require the HPFP. There is no harm in adding a bit of E85 to up the octane (as stated in previous posts). The HPFP becomes limited when pushing beyond approx 450 WHP through various tunes. In Bootmod3 speak, the Stage 2+ E30 tune is where the HPFP upgrade comes in, whereas the Stage 2 E30 does not require it.

There is no issue adding 2gal E85 to a full tank of 93 to clean up timing on a stage 2 93oct map. There are stock hpfp E30 maps, but you need closer to E40 for clean timing and will be on the very edge of the stock hpfp

You'll need to log and check results to know for sure. Every engine, every environment is different. Your $10k engine has no tolerance for guessing games.

i live in socal around/in burbank/glendale and the temperatures average around 76 degrees Fahrenheit / 56 degrees Fahrenheit lowest. Ethanol usually tests around 83%-86% with G&M fuel at Chevron

You still need to log to see if your stock hpfp can handle more than E30.

Think of this. If you have 14.8 gallons of 93 octane and you add 1 gallon of 110 octane you only get to 94. Most octane boosters are 8 or 16 oz bottles. It's mathematically impossible for them to make anything more than a slight difference.
