2016 340i Cylinder wall damage

So on the other day, my car was stalling when i was going slow after a startup and was shaking if I was accelerating, brought it in to the dealership as warranty still there and reports to them the problem I had.

Then dealer told me the spark plug on Cylinder 2 had fouled and yet the ignition coil and injector is functioning okay. They did a leakdown on the engine and compression test and found there are some scoring on the cylinder walls and they have sent pictures to BMW NA and still waiting for them to get back to the dealer.

Anyone had this problem before? sounds weird for the new b58 engine and only couple years of usage..

The only thing I can think of is...If There is no spark in a cylinder, but still pumping in fuel, you wash all the oil away from the cylinder/rings and therefore there would be a high level of wear. not sure how long that would take or if would cause long term issues.

Did you lease or purchase the vehicle? If it's a lease, no need to worry. Warranty will take care of any major problems.

Please ask the dealer to give you a list of all the codes stored. The dealer has all the codes and it's important to know how the service department responded to each and every code. Trust but verify ...

It's very unusual for CEL not to turn on and "drive moderately" message not to be displayed. Five spark plugs firing with one spark plug not participating - a major issue to say the least.

Keep this thread updated. Good luck!

I purchased the car, Drive train and limp mode was on but dealer told me my car only need a software update, and since then issue was resolved and not showing up anymore. and since I told him acceleration wasn't good anymore he had them re learn the valvetronic lift

Other than that no CEL or error codes showing up. car has been in the dealer for 2 business day without me knowing anything other than parts have arrived in order for them to further investigate the issue

Will update this thread as soon as I got more info

It seems that the dealer contacted BMW NA and in case like these - where the root cause is still unknown - BMW NA typically suggests replacing several parts without knowing precise root cause.

It's not unusual because investing 20 hours of diagnostic labor to replace only one part is not cost effective.

Hang in there. Patience and more patience for now.

Update:

BMW is now trying to replace the injectors in the car, the cylinder wall damage was checked for metal particles in the oil filter and they couldn't find any

OK, that's baffling. Did the mechanic see what he THOUGHT was scoring and now they're not so sure?

Few more thoughts about how scoring on cylinder wall can often happen.

The piston could be simply defective. As the piston expands when transiting from cold to hot state, the piston can score the cylinder wall. The lack of lubrication at a specific moment in time is another factor to pursue.

What concerns me is the dealer's pursuit of solutions which do not explain the physical contact between the piston and the cylinder wall. Bad spark plugs and injectors do not touch the piston or the cylinder. The root cause should also focus on why the contact was made between the piston and the cylinder wall.

I suggest to open a case with BMW NA. This will prioritize your case.

So did I understand the photos correctly that there is scoring in multiple cylinders, not just the #2 which they told had the bad plug? Leaking injectors could cause that (washes the oil film away) and also foul the plug. Before the final incident did the car seem to start normally and run fine after start?

I just realized you are in Canada. BMW NA is BMW North America in the US. BMW Canada has its own process for customers to call and request extra attention to the vehicle being serviced. Worth calling BMW Canada.

the car always starts normally but the idle are very rough and on acceleration it shakes really bad

Have you tried using engine starting fluid to smooth out the idle?
