X Drive and M performance LSD
Hi, just figured I would share my experience with my trying to get the BMW M performance LSD installed on my 2020 440ix to save anyone time and effort. The dealer was able to order the part with my VIN and everything was giving them green check marks like it was good to go. But it WILL NOT work on Xdrive vehicles. They said the axles are wrong, they even looked into getting M4 axles but that wouldn't have worked either. So I basically got a free rear diff service from the dealer. A bit bummed as they were going to give me employee pricing on the unit.

You need RWD axles/half shafts from a 340i/440i. If you look on RealOEM at the RWD vs AWD models you'll see that the RWD ones have larger axle seals hinting at the different axle types. Also the gas RWD models get the 210mm ring gear diff while gas xDrive models only come with the 188mm ring gear diff.

Thanks for the info! Its disappointing that BMW wont update their systems to show the incompatibility. So with the smaller ring gear in the Xdrive models would that be a weak point in the drivetrain?

I wouldn't necessarily call the smaller diff a weak point. For RWD vehicles ALL the torque goes to the rear. For xDrive some of it gets routed to the front so there isn't as much in the rear.

If you want an LSD with your Xdrive, check out diffsonline.com. They can build you a custom option. That's the route I went on 435i Xdrive. The car is a blast to drive now.

It wasn't cheap. But it drives like it came from the factory. I think I paid $3800 for the diff with REM polished bearings, and REM polished ring and pinion gears. $600 for install at Tyspeed NJ.

As stated above. I upgraded to a 210 diff with OS Giken LSD, new (beafier) axles and shorter driveshaft. All done by Hardeman in NL. The stock 188 diff was ready for maintenance/replacement of bearings already at some 120,000 kms and now collecting dust in my garage.

random lurking in the forums to find some well sought after knowledge. Not all heros wear capes. Roughly how long it take for the diff to be made?

I ordered the diff in March and it was ready by May. At the time diffsonline was swamped. They're a very small operation, Dan (the owner) does the building. It's 100% worth it. He's very good at what he does.

pretty quick then lol and how has it been holding up? do you give it a good beating or every now and then give er a little send here and there? i've been reading up on the technical information, a lot to take in and a lot of stuff i'm just now learning. I'll definitely be looking forward to figuring out a set up to purchase, almost like a kid in a candy store
