BMW 320d F30 buying guide

Currently got an Audi A3 2,0 Tdi S line. Looking to go back to BMW 😃

Can you guys give me any pointers on what I should be looking at, apart from the standard things like brakes, tyres etc.

Any common issues with the engine, interior etc I should be looking at?

Looking at like a 2013 model with the professional sat nav, 19 inch 403 rims, with approx 60k on the clock.

Thanks in advance.

There is a major problem with all 320d's, they have two cylinders missing!

one issue ive come across on the n47 engine timing chain is prone to problems, not all but certainly a fair few - google n47 timing chain issues. I had mine replaced under warranty recently @ 60k miles so jist one to be weary of..alot on this forum have had no issues so dont let me scare you but worth mentioning to ensure you have it covered under warranty if required as its a costly replacement, certainly north of £1k... got to say i love my 320d m sport (if poss make sure its a msport!) and having had it remapped its certainly no slouch now

On our 2012 F30 there has only been one issue of a squeaky steering but it was addressed under warranty. At first they lubricated the steering but on the second visit the column was replaced.

The paint etched (black sapphire) after some evil fell from the sky... I was at the NRA with the good lady and had I seen it then I would have pointed to the bird and shouted "PULL" to her. It was odd because we had supaguard on the paint but addressed under warranty with a good polish. Nothing else to date.

I have driven a Mercedes C200 and to be honest the BMW felt so much better! The performance, handling to how the boot lid closes... It could fool you as a 320d... it has some serious go to it. 0-60 in 7 is pretty decent but some choose to remap. We average 48mpg. Mostly motorway miles.

You wouldn't even miss your Audi!

I had no issues with my previous 320d. They're good cars and you won't regret it. If you can afford try and get the M Sport Plus pack which includes M Sport Brakes and Harmon Kardon Sound System. The standard Brakes look pretty crappy due to surface corrosion even on newer cars. It's a common thread and BMW should do better.

If your going for the 4 cylinder diesel I would see if your budget can push to an F30 325d, it's worth having the extra power.

I had a 63 plate 320d M Sport Touring auto with M Sport Plus pack. In 3 years 22k miles (not a lot I know in 3 years!) not a thing went wrong. Had some rattles from the tailgate which sorted themselves out before I could book it in. Apart from that, perfect.

I ran my first 320d MS from 2013-2016 and covered 110k miles, no issues to speak of.

On my second one ('16 Lci car) and 31k miles in and again nothing to report.

They do a great job as a work horse and absolutely best in class.

Just be aware that the LCI model came out in July 2015. Towards the end of 2015 there were old and new stock being sold, a pre-LCI model should be cheaper. There were many differences between the two models including a new 320d engine if you want to go a bit newer.

Hi Yaz

At what mileage did you have issues with the chain?

1. this is probably #1 to check, paperwork or ask dealer to confirm if it doesn't suffer this flaw! If you found car you want, get VIN and ring up BMW to check over the phone on their system before you hand over your hard earned money.

2. when you get into car to test rive, go to vehicle information menu > vehicle status to run car checks, do this after test drive! here is tutorial:

3. there is apparently an issue with squeaky door seals, you might have to listen out for that when test driving

Yes but it must have different injectors etc judging by the remap figures.
I was thinking if he remaps the 325d it actually makes slightly more power than the standard 330d and its probably lighter too

325d was a detuned 3 litre was it not? In the USA they had a more powerful 4pot.

Worth doing a remap then!

Anyone know the cost for a 320d? and what figures to expect?

Id imagine so .. the 4 pot F30 325d make around 280bhp and 550nm torque after a remap, the 320d make around 225bhp and 450nm.
