So I know its not a common problem on N55's like the S55 engine but I do plan on going with a vargas turbo this summer and want to play it safe. Does anyone really know the true cause of crank hub failures is it the bolt backing out or is it the friction washer not having enough grip on the gear. I found vargas's crank bolt capture which is a cheaper option but is that truly a fix if its really due to the bolt just backing out then I guess so but wanted to hear from someone who might know.

You're probably going to need to deep dive the M3/S55 boards for the answer. IMO its the friction washer since the capture bolt doesn't prevent it completely, but that's my coles notes version after reading for a short time.

I would agree, look at S55 forums and watch some of the youtube videos on the fixes. I think you wanted to get the actual keyed 'fix' for a permanent solution so that you know there is no way it can spin. Assuming you feel the need to do it in the first place.

Ya I'm going to look into it more hope maybe someone can confirm it. I just want to do it before the turbo just since it'll make more then a stock S55 and heard in some cases people skipping time even while having the car fully stock. Wish they would have just done this differently from the start they basically have the timing gear walking on thin ice and one wrong step and we're getting bent over by bmw.

Save your money. I can only remember 1 claim here so far of SCH on an N55, and that person claimed it was due to a moneyshift.

I just went ps2 and I have also been kinda worried about this but I have found no posts from any n55's that this happened to. So either it's uncommon or all those who have had the failure were so pissed they stopped going on bmw forums. So I think I'll take my chances. I hope these word don't come back to bite me.

i am ps2 93 meth, 2014 335i n55, i spun my hub
drivetrain pops up on screen, i had notice that the car extra cranks when starting
I drove home easy with no issues

I checked the code and this is what I got

Can you give more details regarding this? What do you mean by extra cranks when starting? Was this prior to or after the spum crank?

after i guess it's when I got the drivetrain warning
extra cranks cuz timing is off
