440i Second service (major)

Car is due the major four year service , spoke to the local main dealer to get a quote :

£523 which includes - oil / filter / micro filter / air filter / spark plugs / vehicle inspection / standard scope (iDrive updated)

Not too phased by the price but was told that the approx £250 extra cost (over the minor service) was that the air filter and the plugs will be changed and because replacing the plugs is a labour intensive job then this is where the extra costs are incurred.

With the car having covered just 9800 miles i fine it strange that the plugs need replaced ??

As i am contemplating just keeping the car for a few years i also got a quote for a two year service plan , £899 which includes this major service and inspection / brake fluid change 2022 / minor service in 2023.

Thoughts - K

What I can't comprehend is only doing 9800 miles in 4 years!

I don't think that 899 will save you a great deal. Once your car is over 4 years you can get the discounted servicing rates for older cars through dealers. This chops a reasonable amount off the cost.

Unless they can backup why they need to change the plugs, I would say no. Can they show the ISTA reporting showing spark issues?

Easy to explain ,i live three miles from work / gym / supermarket so minimal use , i also have a Cayenne which is used for the same journeys along with a couple of motorbikes and a pushbike when i am feeling energetic , which isn`t too often. The wife does similar minimal annual miles in her Juke.

No spark issues AFAIK but it does say on their "Servicing explained sheet" that the plugs do get replaced at a major service , every four years.

---------------

Has a chat with a local Indy that look after a couple of work colleagues cars and come recommended (Prestige Car Specialists in Ibrox) , they quoted £225 for a major service , minus the plugs , which includes oil + filter / micro filter / air filter / updating the iDrive and the BM database , is that the correct price for an indy doing the work ??

I will pop down tomorrow and have a chat with the view of letting them do the work.

K

Wow that's less miles than me, and I thought mine was low. I've done 15,000 miles in three and a half years.
I'll be in the same boat as you soon, but the place I get mine done is only £360 for the major service. It's a BMW specialist rather than a dealer though.

The issue you may have (and someone correct me if i'm wrong) is that if you skip the spark plug service, the okay won't be green, but will be orange instead.

Good question , awaiting the reply for those in the know.

When they update iDrive do they enter only what has been done or is it a full tick box list for the entire service that needs to be completed ??

Have just joined the Forum & can't find where so post a "new topic" but this is service related. In February 2020 I took delivery of a pre registered 430iM Sport from major dealer with 19 miles on the odometer. It is due an oil service this May which I have booked at the same dealership I purchased it from. Looking through the paperwork I received on delivery there was no "service book" supplied. When I queried this with the dealership on booking the oil service they said modern BMW's don't have a paper book as it is recorded on the I Drive. Can anyone here confirm this is correct?

No service book with mine , all on the iDrive and manufacturers database , the servicing data is also stored on the key - i believe.

@kendo67
Which Dealer quoted £523 for the Service / Check?
Seems all the quotes I'm getting on line are around £620 to £630 including the MOT

Mine is due in June. Done nearly 22000 miles since September 17. Which is about normal for me (other cars/bike)

Sounds about right for an initial inquiry as an MOT is around £50 on its own.

Douglas Park , Glasgow city center dealership.

Started at £575 but soon dropped to £523 with the 10% discount , going to squeeze them a bit more as i am getting quotes for around £345 from local independents for the same work.

Work includes : oil / oil filter / micro filter / plugs / air filter / vehicle inspection / standard scope (iDrive update) but no MOT as mine is not due until June.

I would rather BM did the work as it is less of a haggling down point when selling if it has a FBMWSH opposed to an Indy.

Supply your own spark plugs. You should be able to source them for about £80 less than BMW sell them at.
If you don't do the plugs, the service in the iDrive won't show as complete. All elements are listed, I've just had mine done.
I get a really good rate from my dealer (for various reasons), and with me supplying my plugs mine was £285 all in - £875 retail.
I'll go take a snap of the iDrive service for you so you can see the ticked elements...

Thats great , just what i needed to know.

Will have a chat with the service dept on Monday re supplying the plugs myself and see what ££ difference it makes to the final price .

I don`t mind paying for the work but object to being knowingly shafted for the parts.

Yeah, IIRC, the standard Bosch plugs (at staff rate) are £110. Anyone's guess at retail, but probably in the region of £140/£150.
I wanted the NGK Iridium plugs, which run cooler (as I'm BM3 stage 2), which I got for £73. I'm sure you can get the standard Bosch ones cheaper than that.
Well worth shopping around for them.

Edit:
OEM part number is: 12120040551
BOSCH ZR5SPP3320 are the ones for the 440i I believe - set of 6 on ebay is £45

Thanks Guys.
I'm more than capable of doing most of the service myself, and it does go against the grain to okay through the nose for very little work. But...the FSH thing ...
I maybwell keep the car for years - I'm nowhere near bored with it yet, and at nearly 4 years, that's unusual for me (ignoring the car I've had since 1977...)
