Anyone here use Spray Max 2k clearcoat?
I used the Spray max Glamour 2k clear coat, it come out with a lot of orange peel, so I'm using 1500 grit sandpaper to get rid of it as you can see on the blue painted car, the problem is that the orange peel look still remains and then I end up sanding through the clear coat like on the black car:
I've done 3 coats of base coat, followed by 3 coats of 2k clear. Is there anything I can do to prevent soo much orange peel? Thanks j Last edited by straightdraw84; 07-26-2020 at 02:37 PM.. |

Orange peel is normal, so you have to use enough clear coat to allow you to sand it out. I do at least six coats, with the last two fairly heavy. You can't take it out with a single grit of paper. I start with 800, then 1200, then 2000, and then 3000 3M trizact. Go easy with the sanding. The only grit you want to have it looking almost perfect with is the 3000.

I get my paint from www.automotivetouchup.com. I use a compressor and spray gun.

I give it 3 or more days to be sure it's fully cured. Body shops will do it after one day but they use heat lamps to accelerate the cure time.

I use sprayguns for all my garage work and a tiny bit of peel is usual but certainly no more than OE finish. Another tip for rattle can users is stand the can in hot water for a few mins, much better results as pressure increases and paint FLOW OUT is better. Been painting for over 30 years so can tell you for sure that heavy peel is not normal IF you spray correctly. |

I used Spray Max 2K on a lot of the parts on my E30.
I always sprayed one light coat, then medium, then went to town, got minimal orange peel, but this was also on parts that I didn't care about, suspension, etc. Let me find a few pictures. Ok, maybe not the best examples. But the paint is good, and is holding up really well. I used their Satin Hot Rod black on my engine bay, came out really well. |

Orange peel is normal, with clear coats and color only. In fifty years of painting cars I've never been able to get a perfect result without wet sanding and rubbing out. It's even present on new cars. Getting rid of it on a factory finish is one reason for paint correction, the other being spider webbing that inevitably shows up sooner or later.
