2014 435i warm starting issues

So lately I've noticed my car is having an issue starting after driving it for about 15-25 min, then turning it off and let's say going into a store for about 15 min.

When I come back out and start the car, the dash lights flash, and it attempts to start and will either not start or start slowly. If it doesn't start I'll push the button again and it will struggle to start. When it does start the lights come on normal, but gauges stay all the way to left as if the car is off and then a couple of seconds later they go back to normal.

I had a feeling it's the battery, so I charged it overnight about week ago...no change.

The weirdest thing is that this only happens when the car is warm, doesn't happen first thing in the morning or after work.

Should I just go ahead and get a new battery? Any other ideas?

well.. what software would you use to code the new battery? it should tell you the life as well.

I didn't realize I needed to code a new battery. I guess I need to do a little more research.

Just an update, my battery reads 72% on bimmerlink. I'm just going to get a new battery this weekend. Looks to be the original in the car anyway.

72% charge or some measure of 72% life remaining? The car doesn't charge itself over 80% typically. 72% might not mean you need a new battery...

Any ideas of what the issue could be? Everything else on the car seems to be working just fine.

Need to load test battery, or you can try logging voltage on startup to see if it drops abnormally low. It could also in theory be the starter even if the battery is fine - a failing starter can draw an excessive amount of power causing the car to struggle to start even if battery is fine. When the issue occurs does the car turn over very slowly? I would expect the start to be more affected by the warm vs cold differences as well...

Have you tried turning on auto start stop to see what happens?

I'll try logging the voltage on start up. When the issue occurs, yes it does turn over slowly.

I'll also try turning on auto start/stop today on my way home from work.

Im having the same issue as well on 2014 F30 335i w/ ~80k miles. Drive to store, grab something and super sluggish upon start up. A static battery test at autozone showed healthy battery- although battery appears to be original from date of mfg. Cold starts are fine.

Sounds like your starter is failing after a hot soak. It's a common way for a DC brushed motor to fail when exposed to high heat.

After starter replacement of a 14+ ( may also be below 14), there is a function in ISTA and other scanners to reset the stop start count. While not imperative to do, it could cause stop start to not function as it gets closer to it's end of life. Similar to an oil change reminder that isn't reset at the oil change, and comes on 500 miles later.

Just curious, were you able to just replace the battery or did you have to goes through this coding process?

Getting close to replacing battery, trying to stay ahead of the game. Thanks!

I registered the new battery using the full Bimmerlink app ($41) and I already had a Bluetooth adapter.

Hi was it like it turns starter once and then pauses for a second and then again and pray to god it starts?

Mine also 420xd b47 start perfectly after night in cold, from 2 rotation (one press) perfect start

But if I race abit, and park for 2 min I can’t start. It spins once or twice and can’t then pauses sort of. Scary to live like that.
