Racing Diffs

Hey All!

Just wondering if anyone has put a racing diff’s lad in their car?

I see there is a new product which doesn’t require machining of the spider gear - https://racingdiffs.com/products/bmw...conversion-set

But will still require the ring gear to be machined off.

Does anyone actually understand what the process would be to do this from the start? Is it as simple as:

Remove old diff
Send to shop to get the ring gear machined off
Install this (no additional help needed?)
Remember install
Lay down some skids?

Thanks!
Toby

I ran across this video a while ago. It’s more involved machining than that, and from the video does involve machining the spider gear. (Edit sorry: what I remembered as the spider gear actually looks like the spline on the axle cup). Also re-welding the ring gear back on correctly.

Afaik the torsen diffs are a complete unit, so only the ring gear machining is required, as long as clearances/lash is correct.

I personally wouldn’t use that - it’s a basically a gimmick device or poor mans clutch pack. There’s a lot of potential complications that you just don’t have with the helical difs. Get a complete Quaife or Wavetrac from VAC or diffsonline and send them your core.

I run a Quaife in my M135i.

Search youtube for "npharkes" to find the videos. I am doing some different testing with it

This seems rather crude applying constant friction between the sun gears. Also a specialist job and easy to get wrong.
