neglected oil change for 12k miles, what can I do now to repent for mistake?
Hi all --
Apologies for such a horrible first post. I bought a used 2014 328i base model (at 25,000 miles in April 2017) from the local BMW dealer, and through my inattention / negligence / waiting for some notification, I let it get up to 37,000 through highway commuting before I noticed it was time to change the oil. I was driving a Model S before, so engine maintenance had escaped my mind. I repent, I apologize, I admit my negligence, and cringe here to admit it. But I immediately got the full synthetic oil change on realizing this. My question now is, what to expect having done this deed, and, can I make up for it by getting a premature oil change now to flush out all the accumulated toxins of that bad period? Should I decrease the next oil change interval to 3,000 miles? What have I done, and what can I undo? Thanks for any advice! |

Many of us just let the car notify us (re-read the manual on checking maintenance required); it does so at about 90% for oil intervals (checking blackstone reports). There are a ton of oil threads; read them. |

The OCI is determined by the number of gallons consumed, plus the oil condition(too acidic/alkaline) as detected by oil sensor. The number of gallons for 2014 should be around 333 gallons, so for highway commuting that yields, say, 35mpg(e.g.), your OCI will be higher than 12000 miles. So did your CBS ask for oil change for a few thousand miles before your car was brought in for oil change? Since the old oil was drained and new oil was added, there will be no issue going forward, just follow your CBS OCI. Some may suggest a mid-interval oil change, but for 10000-mile OCI, that can be a bit much. |

In order to fully repent you must:
Drive a Toyota Camry for a period of 12,000 miles and not wash it or change the oil

What was done is done. Sure, if you want do another oil change after 1k miles to help 'flush out' things to ensure you're all good.

Now instead of your engine lasting 300k miles it'll only last 298k. Make sure you dump it before then.
But in all seriousness, you should be fine. And changing your oil sooner won't do anything. Normally I do just to get back on the normal interval so it's easier to remember when to change it again, but you really won't gain anything. Technically if something was damaged due to being late on an oil change, no amount of oil changes will fix it. |

Thank you all for your info -- I will probably get the next change a bit sooner (like maybe 1000 miles premature) just to assuage my guilt, and then be more conscientious! |
