Looks better than expected. But if I was in the market for something like this I would just get a wagon.
And realistically, with all these mini SUV type vehicles out nowadays, weird hatchbacks are pretty unnecessary.

The 5GT in the USA sold/sells far more units than the touring ever did per year...do you call that a flop? Until you've taken one on a long trip with 3 other adults, don't knock it! Looks very much like a BMW from the inside, when you'll spend 98% of your time with it in visual range.

Until you've driven one on a long trip with a full load of adults, you don't know why it is in the market. My longest day was about 15-hours and over 1,000-miles. Got up, walked straight, felt fine, no buzz as did my passengers. The thing is big for a reason. The rear shape is there for a reason. Form follows function. You don't need the function, fine, buy something else. Like comparing skinny jeans to carpenter's overalls...same company, same quality, different clientele. Does it make you stop buying Levis because they cater to a market other than yours? Same with Porsche, purists hate they make anything other than the 911. Doesn't make the other vehicles they sell less, or the 911 less. Why should it on BMW? |

I agree... same with my GT as well.

Instead of flop, let's call it "exclusive." It's very controversial, but I love my GT. Quote:
How Dare You Or actually, if I think about it, good. More exclusivity for me HOnestly, the GT looks better in person, especially in darker colors. I didn't like it before when I saw it in beige or white, but in DGM or black, it looks quite good. BMW needs to hire someone to choose their press release's car color better LOL

This is simply not true. Monthly sales volumes are comparable. You should also consider that E61 was only sold as a single model (530xi and then 535xi), while F07 is sold with two different engines and both RWD and AWD.

Burn them all!
I hope it flops hard, they would have been better off giving us a 335i powered f31!

Guys, before we say its a total, useless, nonsense car that BMW makes
We should all wait for the review by Chris Harris or Motortrend.

I don't like SUVs; too big for me, but I still want to be able to haul stuff. I am often unable to load items that are too big to fit into the trunk opening of my F30, so I have to lower the rear seat backs and load it through one of the rear doors. Plus I don't like the look of wagons. Regardless of the function, I still prefer this body style over my F30. I like the size and proportions. I won't be on the market for a new BMW until 2015, but I'll definitely keep this in mind. |

These are international, whole company sales numbers. In 2009, the Tourer was still being sold in the USA (I think)...total sales: 36,987. In the first full year when the GT was for sale, 2010, they sold 26,486 GTs and 32,488 Tourers. It may or may not be safe to assume that the 4,500 or so fewer Tourers sold were because they were no longer available in the USA, but the GTs more than took up for that, and on the more expensive vehicle, with a larger profit margin, which decision was right? You figure it out. It may have not meet the full expectations, but it did and has done well enough to continue - the bottom line, is that they sold more cars and made more money which is the reason they are in business, not to cater to a specific individual's preferences. Buy enough stock, you can help make the decisions. BMW is profitable, catering to a bigger audience is what has helped them achieve that. No whining is going to really make a difference.

I have the exact production numbers, specifically for USA - you can have them too, I can send you the 36MB dump of VIN range database from ETK, it breaks down production of all BMWs ever made, by month and by model (which are different for US and EU). So, just to reiterate what I said before: four different versions of F07 are selling in the US at the exact same rate as a single version of E61 did. This was _not_ a smart business decision, no matter how you look at it. |
