Hmmm, so what does everyone think of the move to mechanical coolant pumps? And the addition of turbo coolant pump?

Previously turbos were cooled by main electric water pump, but it would have to pump coolant through entire engine.
Now new smaller pump only has to pump for turbo, so much less strain on parked car battery. Similar to larger (V8) engines with multiple electric pumps cooling different things each.

Means we'll have to replace them every 60K just like in the good old days.

Looks to me we have an actuator and some sort of flow valve attached to the main coolant pump. So a bit more complex than a conventional mechanical pump.

I guess this is to regulate the output and allow a more flexible cooling strategy.

Separate turbo cooling makes a lot of sense.

For those that are familiar with the N20, how different is the architecture of this engine? Same basic engine with small tweaks, or very different (and hopefully improved)?

Very different

Should be a lot smoother with the balancer shafts (new feature)

I noticed that. I have some experience driving the N20, and I was impressed. Can't wait to try out the new engine!

Like the B58 the VANOS, timing chains and oil pump chains are now on the rear of the engine.

Probably an engine out procedure to change

Only wish that the USA was getting this engine at the start of 2016 F30 production like the B58.

Me too. Think the engine may still be caught up in the federal review stage maybe?

This little engine may finally have enough pull for the next 5 series. The current 528i is too much weight for the N20.

Balance shafts are not new. They are a requirement for engines except I-6s and V-12s. This is just a new design for the B48.

Which BMW 4 cylinder gas engine has ever had balance shafts ?
Not the N20, N26, N46N, N43, M44, M43, M42 ect ect ect

Some of the Diesel ones, yes, but not gasoline engines.

Check again. N20/N26 design integrated the balancers into the oil pump drive system. They refer to it as "compensating shaft unit."

You are correct.
Forgot about those.
B38/B48 design now similar to Diesel one rather than N20 type.
