US Gets BMW Turbo Diesel Engines - 180HP 4-Cylinder and 255HP 6-Cylinder
BIMMERPOST NEWS US Gets BMW Turbo Diesel Engines - 180HP 4-Cylinder and 255HP 6-Cylinder BMW has confirmed that two diesel engines will be making their way to the US. One is a 2.0L single-turbo twinscroll 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine outputting 180 HP and 280 LB-FT torque, the same stats as the N47 engine which currently powers the F30 320d and F10 520d. As for consumption and performance, the 320d, for example, achieves an impressive 52.2 combined MPG (US) (40.5 city / 61.8 hwy), with a factory claimed 7.1 secs 0-60 mph. The other diesel will be a 3.0L twinscroll 6 cylinder turbo outputting 255 HP (no official torque number yet, but expect 400+ lb-ft torque). This will be an all new engine not seen before in any other models. These engines will be paired with 8 speed automatics and make use of SCR technology (urea based "selective catalyst reduction") to meet the stringent US diesel emission standards. BMW has not yet confirmed which models will receive these engines (nor when), but the 4-cylinder may see duty in a future 220d, 320d, 520d (or perhaps labeled for the NA market as 225d, 325d, 525d), while the 6-cylinder will power models labeled 25d, 30d, or 35d, as well as their counterparts in the xDrive models. No matter the nomenclature, this is wonderful news for the BMW's NA customers! The F30 3 Series lineup will likely be the first models to use the new engines. |

Glad they are bringing the four-cylinder diesel here. I think generally the reason anyone would buy a diesel is for the fuel economy. While the 335d is a monster, it was more expensive than the 335i and being a 6 cylinder, the mileage was good, but not great. A four cylinder diesel, cheaper than the 335i (hopefully) and I'd guess a roughly 45 MPG EPA highway rating sounds like a more appealing choice financially over a gas car. Probably something people weren't able to justify with the 335i/335d choice.
280 ft.lbs will still make it a decently brisk car in real-world driving situations. |

I would love to see a 320d touring with xDrive and M-Sport! ~50mpg average would be incredible for a family/roadtrip wagon!

Now the question, how much will it cost? Hopefully, not more than a arm nor a leg.

A four cylinder diesel is the engine we've needed here for a long time.
320d Touring would be awesome!

Funny you should say that.
One of my colleagues had the last generation Prius. I followed him on a door to door trip of about 100 miles (mixed road types) in my E60 520d. I can't recall the exact figures but the E60 was better by around 3 miles per gallon. Obviously the F30 320d would be much better than my E60!

The 320d should be the base model in the 3 series range so let's hope they price it accordingly because this is incredible news.
Looking on the BMW UK website, it looks like a 320d is generally ~$1,000 British Pounds cheaper than a 328i. Sounds perfect to me. |

there is no way those MPG numbers are accurate for US EPA testing. An Audi A3 using similar diesel with less power only gets 32 city and 40 highway. 40 City and 60+ highway is not possible, I am guessing there is a conversion problem here.
If it was true, I think the Prius would be in serious trouble as lots of "wealthy" people buy it just for its environmental image, they would probably much rather drive a BMW that gets 50 MPG on average! |
