A couple of the members here did it. Kit costs around $300. You'll need ISTA to keep track of the temp.

The ISTA+ "Oil adjustment" procedure following pan/filter replacement is as follows (car initially off and leveled):
1. Fill pan until fluid drips from the fill plug
2. Turn car on, and immediately repeat step 1
3. Get in the car and shift to reverse, then D, then go into the manual shift gate and hold gears 1 & 2 for 10 seconds.
4. Put the car back in park and rev the engine at 2k RPMs for 30 seconds to fill the torque converter.
5. Repeat step 1. Replace fill plug

The fluid is supposed to be between 30-40 degrees C before doing step 5.

Use Max Axess ratchet with a 8 mm Max Axess Hex Bit Socket for drain plug.

If you know the process, then it's not anything crazy but for the average DIY'er, if they don't read up, they're going to have a bad time.

Any recommendations for the ISTA+ scan tool?

I'm looking at this one: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...SABEgLpLPD_BwE

Yeah I asked that exact question once or twice and didn't get any solid answers... I need to try my current scan tool and double check if it can read trans temp. Hopefully someone replies with a solid scan tool suggestion as I just ordered the filter/fluid kit.

Sorry if this is a dumb question...but isn't ISTA a downloadable software that can be used via laptop and enet?

It could be. I've never heard of it before. When I googled it I just found tons of random things so I came back to this thread

I believe you are correct that it's a software and can be used how you described. I could be wrong but that's what I thought...

So really, no scan tool is necessary. Just this software, a laptop, and a enet to obd2 (which most of us already have if we have BM3)

It might be some other cable other than eNet but yah, I think that's it.

Just to update everyone about the scan tool, for those with JB4 and the Bluetooth kit: trans temp is an option in the gauges. It seems to be working accurately for me, so that's what I'll use. Easy enough.

I've emailed one of my local dealers in Langley BC, Canada and got a $1200 (950usd) quote for transmission service. I originally thought that's excessive but looking around this thread it seems about average for the dealers to charge. Mind you, I didn't ask what they consider the service entails lol.

My car is at 72000 km and i see that most intervals are listed in miles so I think I got some time left before I have it done 👀

Would anyone have a rough idea what transfer case fluid (diffs) change would be? Cost wise

Oh and anyone successful done the service and things went smooth ?

I have done my transmission fluid change at 93000km (recommended at 80000-120000km) at my local dealer. It was containing new oil pan for transmission because oil filter is part of that and official ZF fluid was used to avoid problems. Brake fluid was changed at the same time and everything together was 750€ total. Everything went smooth in my opinion and now I have 145000km on clock. So I must carry on second change soon

Haha nice, do you by chance know how much was the tranny job by itself? I'm gonna ask my Indy when I see them for pricing as well. Your 750€ seems way better as they did the brakes as well.

My dealer wants 789€ for just the transmission service

I must check if I can find the receipt of the job (later today). I have excel sheet where I'm keeping book of what is done for the car but that is listing only total cost of the jobs. But as you can think the brake job is cheap compared to transmission.

I found the receipt. As I thought the brakes didn't cost much. New brake fluid plus labor was 90€ total. Transmission oil was 298€, oil pan 241€ and labor 121€ which totals to 660€. All the prices includes VAT which is 24% in Finland.

Thanks for taking your time to dig out that record 💪🏻

Now I know what I can expect. I'm at 70k km so I got a bit before I need to drop a grand on it.

I'm waiting to get a quote for the diff/trans drain/refill from a local BMW shop. Will post the labor price on Monday/Tuesday.

Looking forward to your quote. What shop? You're sorta local to me.

M-Spec Performance. They are a bit pricey but they know their stuff. I dropped off my car there for software update and an overall look at the car. No issues with the work and they had a ton of BMW's there from old to new.

Good to know that DIY is possible. Any difference between manual (6 speed) transmission and automatic transmission vehicles? Will using the same BMW OEM parts work when changing out to new transmission fluid?
