Rusting MPPSK exhaust tips

Whilst washing the car the other day I noticed one of the exhaust tips (right) seemed to have some rust on it. Only had the MPPSK a year so will definitely give the dealership a shout when lockdown is relaxed a bit more. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Pictures of both tips attached.
Cheers.

Have you tried using Autosol to see if it can get rid of the rust? Or are you leaving it on there to show the dealer

No only used the rim cleaner on it with no joy. Definitely going to leave it to the dealer as this shouldn't be having 12 months in.
Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏿

I've had mine replaced under warranty for corrosion. Shouldn't be a problem

At the stealers to sort this out and an interesting experience so far. Contactless handover of keys and car disinfected before being driven away. No free coffee and biscuits anymore 😞. Hope it doesn't take long to swap the exhaust tips.

Interesting response but we are all different.

The 2nd tip does not have the issue and yes it's not a major issue but I'll rather have the tips without the rust and yes I believe they are stainless steel under the carbon so should not rust.

Cheers.

What kind of value is this comment adding? The OP has asked if people have experienced this and view on getting it rectified I assume as all bmw parts come with a two year warranty.

Either provide a useful input or I'd say be quiet.

Thanks for the insight into how metals rust, very very insightful.

Proposed replacement tips also have light corrosion on them 😂. They have to order a new set which they will check for corrosion before calling me in for fitting.
QC process seems poor imho.

Might have to order the carbon spoiler to go with the new tips 😉 when I actually get them.

Interesting it's the right tip. I.e. The one with the valve open all the time...

If stainless steel doesn't rust allegedly and they are rusting, then surely it's not stainless steel, just an observation

Yep it was the right one but the left one also had a little corrosion.

Totally agree which is rubbish as the tips are £200 each.

https://shop.bmw.co.uk/bmw-uk-respon...trim/PID_1615/

Would be interesting to see if the same issue affects the chrome tips. Had an MPE on my 28i (chrome tips) for a few years with no corrosion issues.

My GC has the same carbon/SS tips as the OP. They've been on the car for 21 months and are showing no signs of corrosion at all.

Cheers

I looked at the link , read the description and nowhere does it mention stainless steel, it mentions the carbon, I think a presumtion has been made that it is stainless steel, but it isn't , it should be for the price though.

The chrome however DOES mention stainless steel, it is chrome plated stainless steel at a fraction of the carbons cost, you'd think that the carbon piece just went over the chrome bit, but no, obviously not

Stainless Steel can tarnish and/or 'rust'. Depends on the grade of SS and the type of finish. Then, how it interacts with the environment.

I spent over 20-years working with products using different grades of SS. Atmosphere (typically salts left on the SS) and humidity can degrade it quite quickly.

The spec' comment on "SS and chrome", makes me wonder if it is not the best grade for resisting degradation.

We'd use a lot of SS in the 316 range, with additional electro-polishing to give longevity to appearance. Same as the yacht/boat industries, where a lot of damp and salt is present.

+1. Stainless steel is not rust-proof, it's more rust resistant than mild steel but can still oxidise (rust).

I believe that you are on to something. I have the chrome ///M tips on my M Performance Exhaust. Over five years in salty winter environment and not garage kept. Not a sign of rust and the look brand new when I clean them up.

As you say, maybe the assumption is being made that the same chrome tips are just having carbon fiber added on top of them. But that may not be the case. Evidence seems to indicate that cheaper materials or finish are being used in the carbon fiber tips.

The construction of chrome and carbon tips is utterly different.
I've just had MPPSK fitted and had new chrome tips.
I swapped the carbon from my MPE to MPPSK.
I haven't checked on RealOEM but the chrome ones seem to weigh about 3 times as much as the carbon.
The chrome seems to have a double skin which is curved over at both ends. Didn't notice if it had the M/// on it as I didn't remove them from the plastic!
The carbon is effectively just 2 tubes, one metal one carbon.

Interesting I always assumed it would be other way but you learn things everyday.

New tips arrived today will go down on Sat to swap round.

Booked in again tomorrow to get the tips changed again as the new pair have also started rusting. Can't be only me that has this issue but it's being changed under warranty so mustn't complain.

Actually, stainless steel can rust - it's all to do with the quality of the steel and the chromium content therein. So sorry for the correction of your info, but your post is not only unhelpful, but wrong .... I'm an engineer, with qualifications in metallurgy ....
