Castrol Edge 0w40 - No Longer BMW Longlife-01?

I bought some Castrol Edge 0w40 from Walmart (as I've always done), and upon looking at the package, I noticed it no longer had BMW LL-01 approval - or at least it wasn't mentioned anywhere.

I swear it always had BMW LL-01, so I checked the previous bottle I used, and sure enough, there it was: BMW Longlife-01.

Did the formula change that stripped it of its LL-01 approval? Or is BMW getting political/more stringent?

I use it too. I've read that it's the same stuff but they stopped paying BMW the fee to be certified. I'm going to keep using it.

It's all I've ever used in my F30. I wonder who is making the BMW branded oil now. It used to be Castrol.

Looks like BMW is partnered with Penzoil/Shell now.

From what I've been told BMW no longer certifies oils to LL01 so the cert goes away whenever there's a formula change to the oil itself. BMW still certifies LL04 (at least as of 2016) and you can still buy LL01 in 5w30/40.

IIRC M1 brought over, from another market, a 5w40 LL01.
