What it costs to fix Modern Car Tech, ouch!
The owner of one of the best Indy shops in MN, Eurotech posted the hardware costs to fix the radar cruise control on Audi, BMW, etc
Alot to be said for keeping it simple |

Thanks for sharing. So the above costs represent a set of tools / equipment a shop has to invest in before performing the first repair?
One would expect these costs would be amortized over potentially dozens of repairs. What might be the repair estimate from a dealer (who would already have these tools)? |

Shaun Sava Seth Thorson I'm curious to know what the repair cost was for this particular job given these hardware costs? · Reply · 5m Seth Thorson Author Shaun Sava 500-700 alignment and calibration. Hardest part is some shops will do all the easy work and send us only this hard stuff. Hard to make it pay offf we don't also get service work. But if no indy does it dealer can charge whatever as they have monoply |

This is about 1/4 the price of a 'basic complete' ADAS calibration kit.

10k for a good shop is not that bad. I'm sure they can and will charge over a $100 an hour to use this. Look at the set up for wheel alignments and tire changes. These things are cash cows.

How many cars model do you think this equipment can be use with? When I was shopping for cars, I was looking at option that I would never used at the same time will cost me tons of money to fix when it get broken. I missed my old s14 Silvia kouki. All mechanical and just a stereo in my case a Aftermarket DVD player. And when it break ...you can do most of it on your garage. |

Most, but not all VW dealers have the equipment and one tech, usually the lead, is trained to do the stupid $450 alignment of the wheels ACC and laser/ radar guides for lane keep assist on my Jetta premium. Takes them like 3 hrs... it’s a fiasco and absurd.
Figured BMW or any modern car with these are the same price range and crazy priced equipment to calibrate the systems. Bumper removed or wheels go out of alignment, calibration time. One they covered under warranty the other had to pay. Be ready for a surprise...not sure what BMW covers as part of warranty. Glad mine doesn’t have it. But my daughter still drives the VW I gave her and guess who would pay... year. Dad. |

Since so much tech these days come standard on the base model, I think manufacturers are really struggling to innovate with added options which I believe makes up for significant profit margins. Nothing since the introduction of the backup camera, IMO. Car Play would be nice but am just as happy without it.
The lane warning, the 360 camera nonsense that i have with cameras everywhere is just silly. Just bought a 2020 Pacifica as an example and after going through the laundary list of possible options, decided that NOT ONE was worth what they charge on the mid trim level. |
