AWE Exhaust Questions

Hello all,

I had the AWE midpipe and exhaust installed professionally on my F30 328xi. I have a few questions about it however.

1. There is a very fast ticking noise. I was told this was heat shield contractions but it seems too quick. Video attached:

2. I was told by the shop that they didn't want to use some sort of gasket maker/sealer such as Permatex copper. I emailed AWE about it and they recommended Permatex muffler putty/paste. Is this necessary to have?

3. There is a droning noise while going uphill, and around 2000-2300rpm. Is this normal for the exhaust or am I being picky?

Thank you all for the responses!

I can only answer to no3 as I had experienced it myself.

You got youtself a midpipe, that deletes the resonators and thus low frequency vibration or what we call drones are inevitable

I believe the AWE midpipe has a resonator on it. I also had it installed with only the stock midpipe+AWE axelback and it sounded very similar (drone uphill, 2k rpm)

Okay the one I saw didn't have it and its a 340i my bad.

then what I could think of is you have an exhaust leak somewhere that produces the drone

I was also thinking that there was an exhaust leak, but I went over it with the shop technicians and they said everything was tight and no leaks were present.

I have AweQuad+Midpipe, I get droning too during uphill or normal acceleration but cruising on the highway/roads is no drone at any speed. I might go to stock midpipe to see if that will change stuff but honestly love the sound too much....

Does the F30 328 have a flapper on one of the pipes post muffler?

Just wondering if it does because maybe they knocked the control line for that loose when they were putzing around down there.

They do have the exhaust flapper but it is electric and just mounts on the AWE and isnt functional on the awe.

Anyone think tightening the bolts more would do harm? At the shop they just used a ratchet to do it.

I wouldnt tighten them, they are purely there to create a seal and hold in place. If they arent leaking no point in over tightening them

I noticed you have a very similar setup to mine. AWE catback, ER catted DP, BM3 stage 2. Do you have also have that ticking noise that I have in the video?

No ticking noise here but little drone at 2k to 2.5k rpm on comfort mode, zero drone on sport mode. N26 with stock dp, awe resonated mid pipe, and awe quad exhaust.

Wtf...I just listen to that ticking sound...what in the world is that, I don't think that's from the exhaust, if it is... exhaust pipe might be hitting something metal, especially on x drive

I don't think it's hitting anything, because the ticking noise happens when the engine is off and immobile.

AWE says it might be a failed/cracked resonator

Not too sure, I trashed the midpipe and I have the muffler sitting in my basement
