OT aquaplaning....

so, it turns out you need that extra tire tread depth when it's wet on a very wet motorway, especially on the bendy bits

I swear I was a second from having an Armco splitter this afternoon!

New tyres need ordering, MPSS or winters? I'm not buying new wheels, just tyres.

It doesn't snow much in the nw tbh, so winters seem extreme to me. I've only ever once before aquaplaned like today before, and only once hit ice on the motorway. Winters seem excessive.

The winter tyres make a difference. It's been pouring here and now 3 degrees on way home.

I recommend the vredstein wintrac tyres!

MPSS are actually fairly good all season tyres (compared to the factory fit run craps) they are definitely better at 5-7°C than my Winter tyres!

Lots of recent discussion regarding winters. I'll continue to run MPSS and will just leave the car on the drive if the roads are covered in snow/ice.

No no no, I don't use it in the dry, def not in the wet!

No, I forget how fast I was already travelling and pressed go faster, At the wrong time it seems

It happened twice, but the second time was just a twitch at a lesser velocity, to busy watching everyone else and not the road surface. It was one of those "oh" moments

It wasn't raining that hard at the time, but must have been at that spot a minute or so previous

MPSS I think.

Now to get shopping, do we have a target price? 650 a set?

I believe that's what NTG paid for his 19" MPSS.

Aledgedly

What sort of speed were you doing, and what depth of tread do you have on the tyres currently ?

I was just about to ask this. I'm down to 4.5 on the fronts and 4 on the rears... Was fine over the weekend crossing Cumbria in the pissing wet. Not as good as new tyres but still fine for high speed cruising.

Yup. I've asked it because, in my experience, you change tyres once they get down to 3mm. Any less than that in wet conditions is starting to ask for trouble.

The recommended depth are 3mm for summers and 4mm for winters.

Just changed over today myself. 6C this morning when I started changing, then the rain hit while I was washing the car and my summers...

Popped out to get a few bits a bit later. The weather coming in had brought the temperature up to 12C and was very wet. Even at this balmy November temperature, the winter tyres wet weather performance made them an advantage.

That's fine of course as long as your car is already on the drive when it snows. Or there is no way you'll need the car if it does.

Totally agree. I got caught out like that a few years ago. That's why I have winters on both cars.

See I had ruled out getting winters until reading this thread.

My theory was that if I could drive my shitty e reg astra around 20 years ago in winter with no problems then why the hell do i need them now.

But this has got me thinking...

Get winters on your car.

A skidoo.

Skis.

An igloo.

Ice station Zebra.

You can never be too careful

I live in rural North Wales. I've never bought a set of winter tyres, in 25 years of driving.
If the snow is bad enough for me to need winters on, it's bad enough that I'm nicking her Shogun for the day !
