New EGR Heater on 320D

Hi took my car into the dealer last week to have the steering checked. They told me the car needs a new EGR heater. There is nothing wrong with the current part but an improved version is available and they will be changing it as a non chargeable upgrade. Has anyone else come across this ?

I have heard that the B47 engines get new EGR valves.

My 320d B47 even have serious problems probably with the EGR valve. Reduced power, the EGR is shown in the fault memory, I have checked it. Next week I will know more, it will be repaired at BMW.

A non-chargeable upgrade is a euphemism for a recall. Since the part probably doesn't create an immediate safety issue they're not calling it a recall, but if they're replacing them all that's what it is. They know that there's something wrong, they have a fix, and they're being pro-active about addressing it.

From production date July 2015 on it should be a B47 already.

It is as Billfitz wrote. They don't just do it because they are so kind As you can see in my case it can cause real problems too.

My car is back with new EGR valve

Strangely the EGR fault codes were disappeared before I brought the car to BMW (I have checked it by myself). I was driving long distance with higher speeds which probably "cleaned" the engine/EGR

Luckily I had the proof of EGR fault codes and so they could get the EGR on warranty. They said, even if now everything worked fine, after having this former troubles with EGR it could happen in the future that it will stick in a bad position and then engine start won't be released.
