Any photos of what your kit looks like? How big is the container. One thing I do have is this handheld first aid kit I took out of the Mercedes before I sold it lol..

Ground tarp - especially useful during the winter when you have to put on chains (which you should have in the trunk, too.)
Tow rope
Shovel - very useful during the winter
Consider a SPOT satellite GPS emergency beacon rather than a cell phone (or similar).
Water, possibly power bars, etc.

You must be an EMT. No one would ever write Povidone in a real post. Ever.

I was trained in Military Combat lifesaving techniques. So maybe not as good as a working EMT. I did whoever contemplate adding sutures kits and lidocaine that I have in my personal kit. They also make some really good portable splint kits these days. But I wanted to keep this in the context of an essentials kit for regular drivers.

And let's face it, Povidone is a better alternative to alcohol or iodine, I highly recommend it.

No photos yet, but a great idea. I don't have everything together yet and I'm still looking for the best soft cooler/storage bag.

Once I get it all together and photographed I'll be sure to add it to the original post.

Tire puncture sealant? Not sure how much that works on run-flats, but it could do.

The run flats are designed to get you up to 100 miles without air. I don't have a lot of experience with puncture sealant but as it's temporary, meaning you still need to have the tire patched, I don't see the benefit.

I've also heard stories from mechanics that hate the stuff, if it's not cleaned out properly it can have an adverse effect on a patch.

Personally, I'd stick to run-flats if your car came with them, or carry a spare.

Yupp, could never use that stuff due to the run-flats which I hate. I always keep a hand cracked radio + flashlight in the trunk with a magnet base, which would be very helpful in a quick fix in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, you are also missing having extra oil. My car did that on me while going down from the mountains to the capital, didn't tell me from before that oil was reaching lower end, would just show it at the same spot for a solid 3 weeks, then out of the blue lets me know I need to add ASAP. Ever since, extra liter of 0W40 in the trunk.

I have heard that the oil indicator can be way off. Apparently it won't notify you unless it's a full liter above or under.

How about rubber gloves and either a barrier shield or bag valve mask? Basically a blood borne pathogens kit with trash bags for disposal.

A good basic go bag should work fine.

While you're at it latch onto a couple of packets for clotting a wound like we've used for gunshot or other nasty things.

Disregard. I see you have that already. Should have known better!!

I always have a first aid kit, jumper cables, bungee cords, my leatherman, flashlight, spare cash, and food year-round.

My first aid kit is similar to yours, but I would also make sure to have the following:

Neosporin
Tons of gauze
A bottle of alcohol (some stuff will require more than just some alcohol wipes)
Thermal blankets

As for anything else, it varies by season and how far I'm traveling.

I personally agree with the idea of a blood born pathogens kit, but that would be for CPR certified persons. Part of their training includes what type of kit they would want to carry. Blood clotting packs can be harmful, your better off field dressing and seeking medical attention.

Added trash bags

I'm not a fan of Neosporin and I typically avoid petroleum products. Water soluble products such as Aquaphor or Surgilube would be better options.

Also I don't think a bottle of alcohol is good idea, both for flushing a wound or for storing in the truck of a car. I included the Emergency Water Packets for flushing a wound and Providine swabs for cleaning. It should also be clarified that a swab is not the same as a wipe. A swab will carry and transfer more fluid than a wipe, not to mention keep your potentially contaminated hands out of an open wound.

I included Emergency Blankets already, but will clarify that list item.

Don't know how I missed Gauze.

Added Gauze.
Added Aquaphor
Added Surgilube

Those are good for barrier protection or lubrication, but neosporin is good for random cuts and scrapes that may be exposed to contaminated areas. Sterile water is great for irrigation, but I carry a small bottle of alcohol for added cleaning.

I'm glad you carry anything, it's amazing how many don't.

The reason I avoid petroleum products is because they also block air depriving a wound of a key natural healing element. Neosporin in particular provides a stronger barrier and is often medicated.

Either product is better than leaving most wounds dry and both have their benefits, really it's a matter of preference.

Agreed. Anything is better than nothing. I used to have a killer kit that I put together from surplus hospital supplies but it was overkill.

I like to smother wounds in the short term, especially if I know I'm going to replace the dressing soon. Adding in the abx is only a plus, IMHO. I guess it just depends on what I'm dressing. Most stuff just requires povidone or sterile water and a simple dressing.

That's the difficulty with designing an "essential" kit. It can depend greatly on the amount of training each individual has and the amount and type of travel.

Hopefully crowdsourcing it like this will help us find a balance.

Yes they are. For those that don't know. The clotting bandage has to be surgically removed. But it beats the alternative. Use one as a last resort.

I really have no intention of delivering medical advise, but if you have to use a field dressing, pressure dressing, or a blood clotting compound of any kind, you should seek medical assistance ASAP.
