Probably. I got the low warning at about 8000 miles. Add a full qt

Seems common on the N55 during the first interval at least.

Thanks for the confirmation.

The wife and I do tend to run the car hard so I can understand this.

Lifetime of the car I think we are averaging 17.8 MPG.

Agreed, normal. Next time your car is in for service ask them to check on the valve cover gasket. That was the cause on my z435, and gasket was replaced at the 2yr market when i thought to ask about it. I had been putting in a quart every 8-10k miles.

Not added anything yet ... In 11k miles

However a quart every 5k ish miles sounds well within tolerance

Interesting, I drive my car probably a little harder than I should , i.e. frequent full throttle take-offs up on ramps and lots of track days at the Avenue of the Giants (stock tires only lasted 11,000 miles), but my car has never needed additional oil in all of its 28,000 miles.. I did do a relatively hard hard break-in due to the fact I could not wait 1,400 miles to drive it properly, which may have helped out. Anyway, I don't think the need to add a quart after the mileage mentioned is extreme in any way.

I was talking to a reputed tuner shop guy in Miami and talked about how my friend's e92 M3 V8 with just 20k miles needs oil. My friend said its normal as per forum and Bmw dealer.

So where does the oil go ?
Piston rings leaking ?
If this is normal, then is the car giving full performance ?

During normal driving there is a certain amount of oil that "leaks" past the piston rings which it is then burned off in combustion. As for giving full performance, when the oil burning becomes excessive it can clog a shxtload of shixt, otherwise a quart here and there doesn't do much.

Personally, I buy-in to the line of thinking that the hard break-in reduces/minimizes the oil use

On all my BMW so far there was a little bit of consumption before the first oil change but after that there is no oil usage (other than when valve cover gasket was leaking on my Z4 as I mentioned earlier)

Op, this is totally normal... the first 10k, your car will be requiring oil at irregular intervals...

F30 starts life with fully synthetic oil. Hard driving is unlikely to seal the piston rings against the cylinder wall lining IMHO

If you what to break in an engine - with the break in right oil ...

I check my N47 just before it is due service and it always reads full. Working an engine hard tends to cause some oil to vaporize. This shouldn't be a problem if you are using a BMW-spec synthetic oil.
