'15 328i trade in

Hello, I just went back from the dealer attempting to trade my 2015 328i Luxury Line with no accident and one owner.

Apparently the dealer asked for 16000 CAD which is 12300 USD approximately

car is currently 44k miles(70k kms) and the dealer insisted saying its because the G20 coming out. CBB and autotrader said my car should be at 22000 CAD approx

was trading in for a 2017 330i M sport which they priced at 37k CAD (28k usd) and would not even haggle.

What do you guys think?

So the dealer wants $30,000 CAD ($23K USD) for a 2 year newer model? Seems awful steep. The upgrade from Luxury to M-Sport was only about $1,500 new, are there any other optional upgrades? What is the difference of original MRSP of the cars? Mileage difference? I've seen some 2015 340i in the $28-32K price range.

I think you are answering your own question with the trade in value being extremely low. they said they can only give you discounted price for your car because of G20, they can extend you same for the 2017 you are buying because the new G20 is coming out.

No other difference except for the luxury to M sport package. The dealer wanted 20k usd for the additional on top of trade in (cash). the price for the new car I think is fine its just that my value got so low

I always sell private, patience pays off, dealer will only give you less than half of the value of your car. Never worth it.

The dealer will self-admittedly give you the worst deal on a trade. Try private party, or carmax etc.

The dealer is giving you the 48m value of your vehicle, which will be low b/c BMW's are notoriously bad at holding value. The offer given is expected auction return for that vehicle at wholesale.

Source: I set residual values in the US and Canada. BMW values suck a lot more than what BMW financial is willing to admit.

I'd keep the 2015, buy some bumpers and retrofit.

Not worth the $21K CAD. I could buy a Mazda 3 for that money

Carmax just as bad or worse. Not sure if Carmax exists in Canada...

It depends on the car. I always try them first because it's fast (15min) and it's a real tangible offer good for a week. High volume cars seem to do better than other.

Dealers make profits in trade ins (stealing them from unsuspecting customers) and the sale of used cars. That's where the money is.

Private sales used to be a hassle when the only way to do so was with newspaper ads and sticking a For Sale sign on the windshield. With sites like Auto Trader it's so easy, and the customer base so broad, that trading a car in makes no sense.

Few years ago Carmax appraised my E92 at $7000. I sold it privately for $17000 two weeks later. I'm never selling my car to the dealer again.

The dealers are all the same, one would think they wouldn't insult people on trade ins.I wish i could get my wife to listen, she hates trying to sell a car, like most people she has no patience …..Trading is easier! lol sure is,and that is what the dealer is hoping. 10k diff wow...I would wait 6mo for that.....

Ouch!

OP, find a private buyer or another dealer that hopefully has the car you want.

Subaru offered me $12k for my '15 Legacy 3.6R with 73k miles if I bought another Subaru. I said nah, I'm going back to BMW then.

They gave me $15.5k for my Subaru to trade into my current car. They sold my Subaru two weeks later for $16.9k.
