I invariably find it's Ford Ranger drivers who are glued to my rear bumper. Especially the more pimped up ones.

Every morning I drive a section of road that goes from 2 uphill lanes of national speed limit (70mph) down to 30mph with 20mph when amber lights flash during school times. Often pass umpteen cars in the national doing 45-50 only for them to tailgate me when I slow to 20mph outside a school. WTF it's 8-8.30am outside a school wtf are these idiots thinking

Tailgating is certainly moronic driving. Not sure if it's prosecuted enough. I personally haven't noticed that one type of car type is worse for it mind.

How will selling the X3 help though?

It's the Tesla drivers down where I am terrorising everyone. Yesterday, I did see a Jaguar F-Pace SVR eat dust... I think some people just think they have something to prove or imagine a race in their head.. these days I just pull over or change route to let them pass. I would rather let them go then drive up so close behind... what a mangled fud anyhow.

Having learned to drive in the UK and now living in the US, I can assure you that you have it relatively easy in the UK regarding taligating. Here in Las Vegas we have imported every bad driving habit from the other states and more from many other nations.

Like the OP, I try to apply the two second rule on freeways and interstates, but it often results in severe attacks of asphalt agoraphobia on the part of other drivers and even US born and bred passengers.

It's impossible to leave a 2 second gap on the motorway nowadays, guaranteed that someone will think you're leaving them enough room to sneak in to it. 1 sec gap and they'll even do it...

Tailgating boils my piss but what really F"£$'s me off is people that over take you, and with no traffic behind them, they then think they need to get back into lane 1 as quick as they can and proceed to chuck all the shit the lines in the middle of the road on to the front of your car! Just no need!

I agree, on my regular commute between WSM and Aztec west, a fine and always clear road. I watch many of these (driving properly) people. They overtake at .5 mph faster than you, then (just to prove a point) meander back to lane one for a nano second, then same again. They are both moronic and no doubt use 100% more fuel. Make me a little cross, to say the least

Just come up from London on the M1, just had a 40 tonne lorry tailgate me in the ridiculously long 50mph stretch. I had my cruise control set at 50 and obviously with him having the ability to drive 5mph faster he thought he would try and bully everyone out of the way. As I then moved to the fast lane to overtake a car, he inched forward right up the backside of that car. The car I was overtaking then moved to the inside lane and as he accelerated past me in the middle lane he decided to straddle the fast lane coming within inches of my car. Ridiculous driving. Needless to say he then hit slower moving traffic in the middle lane that couldn't go anywhere and I sailed past him at 50mph. Pathetic and dangerous behaviour that got him absolutely nowhere.

To be fair to him, he was probably watching TV at the same time.

Just remember the lorry has a tachograph and your speedo by law has to under read so 50 to you is 46mph to him. he can save 60 seconds on his journey by doing exactly 50mph

Rules for roadworks are no different to the rest of the motorway.
If there is nothing on the lane to your left, MOVE OVER!

Thanks for that. Something I knew anyway and at no point did I state the inside lane was clear...

I've noticed lately a lot of Nissans tailgating me. Usually Qashqai with the odd Navara thrown in for good measure. Really don't understand their motives. Back in my younger days I'd rise to it, but I can't be bothered any more. Sticking to the speed limits seems to really piss people off.

What really fucks me off is a stretch of road I use almost every day. 30mph, then national speed limit then into a village so 30mph again, then 40 back to 30. Pretty much every day I find people doing a flat 40mph for the entire stretch. Twats.

Just move over to the left at the first opportunity, it's annoying but you can do something about it. As for it being a BMW driver trait that's just utter nonsense.

I seem to find I'm most often tailgated by nondescript transport boxes. You know, the kind of car that somebody has liked the colour of or has chosen based on some other non-car feature. Often small cars or family boxes. The angry parent in a people carrier or SUV is often a culprit.

Round here, most roads are single carriageway A Roads. So, when I'm tailgated I'm either in traffic or a slow limit. It's very rare that I'm tailgated on the open road. If a car comes up quickly behind, it will usually overtake. It's only a problem when it's a slow car that wants to drive fast and can't safely overtake.

As others have said, the the one speed divers tailgating in slower limits and then falling behind on faster stretches is a feature of rural roads nationally.

I remember being stuck behind one of these in Scotland. I didn't know the road and was being cautious about overtaking. But, when we reached a town the 45mph in front kept going whilst I slowed to the posted 30mph. They disappeared into the distance. As we were about the leave the town there was a traffic officer with a speed gun having a nice chat with the 45mph everywhere driver...

Tailgating bugs me most in winter. I change to winter rubber and drive accordingly. So, when I have a nondescript car close behind I think it's fair to assume they will most likely be on summer tyres and will be very unlikely to have the same braking ability as me. This becomes very distracting as you then have to drive for two with extra braking distance.
