I had the dealership call regarding the invitational sales event. They have mentioned that I can trade in a car for a newer model for about the same terms and possibly a lower rate. I am still financing a car currently at 1.9% 3.5 years left to go.

Has anybody done a trade in in which they are currently paying for a car. Anything to look out for? Avoid the deal like the plague? Or is this a deal that can work out?

Any suggestions?

That call is nothing more than standard direct marketing. I can tell you its nothing special by the terms that you spelled out that they told you. It is CLASSIC car dealership speak to say "What if I could get you a newer car for about what you are paying now, with about the same terms?"

Its just a ploy to get you into the dealership, thinking about buying a new car. If you were already thinking about buying a new car, great, but treat it just as if you were buying a new car normally.

They want you IN THE DEALERSHIP negotiating with them, not via email with several dealerships where they are at your mercy to "walk" by simply stopping to respond.

(The bolded parts are my emphasis). Standard car dealer speak.

I have gotten 2 calls from different dealerships and 5 fliers trying to get me to triage in my 2 year old 3 series for something newer. Oh and countless emails.

Yup, just marketing - they may knock off $1,000 or similar for the "VIP sales event". I got a call a few weeks ago and I'm ~2.5 years in my 340i. Unless you're actually looking for a new car and are interested in what's new, politely decline and move on with life
