Steering stiffness at high speeds

So i've noticed a strange behavior on my F30 steering feel. When driving at low speeds, the steering is nice and light in comfort. But once i'm driving on the highway (80kmh or more) after some time there is an intermittent stiffness to the steering when you want to pull to the right or left (as if something was lightly holding the steering). I've checked the tires and they are fine (enough thread and inflated properly).

Any ideas what that could be ?

Any chance you have the variable sport steering (VSS) option?

Nope, looking at the options, mine doesn't have this.

Does this problem occur every time irrespective of the road surface?

Yeah, it seems like the surface doesn't have any affect on this.

What year is your car? Has it always done this? I have a 2015 and I mentioned that during my test drive and they said it was normal due to the steering being completely electronic starting in the 2014 year. The steering wheel senses the speed and stiffens up at higher speeds so you don't accidentally do to sudden of a maneuver.
