M Performance Brake install - DIY? Dust shields a pain?

Hey guys - thinking about pulling the trigger soon on the M Performance brakes (370mm). I was wondering if anyone had a DIY. I know it's a caliper swap and rotor/pad change - not scared of that. Is bleeding the brakes on these cars just like every other BMW ever? I have a pressure bleeder from BavAuto. I know about the coding required. What I don't know is if I can easily access the dust shields - on other BMWs I have had to pull the wheel bearings/hubs which sucks.

Thanks!

Attached is the instruction to install the M Performance brake kit.

I did not have to replace the shields on my vehicle when I installed the MP brake kit but from the instructions, the fronts bolt right up and if you do not want to cut the rear shield (per the instructions), you will need to remove the hub/wheel bearing.

Thanks a TON Larry -- surprisingly hard to find!

I was looking at images and the front shields bolts are definitely outside of the hub area, but the rears as you mentioned look like they'd be a pain.

One question - does the new rear shield get cut in order to put it on? Any chance you could peak under your car?

I did not have to install the shields from the kit since my vehicle came with these shields from the factory (i.e. vehicle came with 340/345 M-Sport brakes). According to the instructions, the rear shields must be cut to install.

Thanks - makes sense. I am sensing that the N20/N26 cars probably need a cut and shield replacement.

Did you do this yet? I'm trying to piece together a M Performance brake kit on my 328i (x-Drive, so larger rear hubs). Calipers, Rotors, easy. I'm more worried about gathering all the correct bolts and the dust shield issue.

My 328d xdrive came with the larger shields in the rear already. So there was no need to change those out. My front is easy to do, as its only a few bolts.

x-drive cars don't need to change the rear dust shield.

I did! Check out my build journal:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1&postcount=16

Cliff notes are all cars after 7/2014 have the large rear shields as shown in the pictures of my 9/2014 build above. Also, this means you need "335i" rear rotors if your car is built after 7/2014 also regardless of 2WD vs xDrive.

I’ll have to take my rear wheel off then, when I get back from vacation. I have a 2014 F31 wagon which is xDrive, but it has a build date of 03/2013. Other posts previously said all xDrive has the larger rear dust shield. I already knew about the larger rear hub, just not sure how it translate to the dust shield. Maybe I can check RealOEM for the details.

Actually - looking at the shields you can tell if you have large or not. As for the larger hub/parking brake setup, check my measurements here:

Obviously the new rotor I received was incorrect based on the original (rusty) rotor. I have a 2015 328i RWD, build 9/2014.

For the dust shields you can see through the wheel - note how much area is around the rotor. These are the stock shields on my car I did not have to swap them out.

Hope that helps
