F30 N55 Overheating concerns

I'm worried I may have damaged my engine from driving it home while it was overheating. Full story: I have about a 30 minute commute home from work and about maybe 10 minutes into the drive I got the yellow overheating warning saying to drive moderately. Well I was driving moderately (rpm never over 2k) and the message went away pretty soon after appearing. This repeated off and on a few times appearing and going away shortly after. Then the red one appeared to pull over which I did. The warning went away before I was even fully stopped but I waited a few minutes before starting it back up and continuing home. The yellow warning came and went again and I made it the last 5 minutes or so with no warnings. I didn't realize at the time the temperature gauge was for the oil and assumed I was okay to continue because the temp was not any higher than usual. When I got home I opened the hood and discovered that the small coolant return hose that goes from the upper radiator hose to the coolant bottle was broken off and completely detached from the radiator hose and there were signs of coolant coming out there. I'm unsure exactly how much coolant was lost here and how bad the conditions were that I was driving under. What is the worst case scenario from this? Can I just order a new hose switch it out and top off the coolant and drive the car or should I have it inspected for heat damage? Looking for any guidance on how to proceed.. attached a picture of the detached hose

You might* be okay, assuming it didn't get too hot, but too much heat can warp the head and or block. You can try to swap out that hose and then properly refill/bleed the cooling system. If it holds temp and doesn't overheat, you may be good to go. But if it still overheats after you've repaired the hose and bled the system, take it to a mechanic and prepare to part ways with alot of money.

Could this hose be the entire problem or is it more likely that something else caused the overheating and then the high temps caused the hose to bust off?

It appears the hose just broke way for whatever reason. That certainly can be the cause of the overheating as you're introducing air in to the system. Air bubbles can cause all sorts of issues alone, plus, you're clearly spewing coolant out of there. That can also cause issues.

The key here is did the engine ever get too hot and the head or block warped. Replace the hose, fill 'er back up and pray for the best. If the overheating issues continue, prepare yourself for the worst.

Is there any danger in running the engine just to see what happens? After replacing the hose and lost coolant of course.

Do as you proposed. If the engine was damaged you'd probably already know it.

similar thing happened to me on my 2013 335i. As others said replace the hose (takes litterally a minute) and as long as the car wasnt majorly overheating you should be okay. the hose cost me $40 from my local dealer. good luck!

The damage has already been done. Only way to really tell is to start the motor. Even if you took the entire thing apart, without actually measuring the head/deck and seeing if something happened to it you probably wouldn't even notice any damage to it anyways. Turn it on, if it starts over heating, smoke starts coming out, etc.... Turn it off immediately and prepare your wallet

Honestly though, it sounds like you did everything right while you were driving. My guess is you'll be fine after replacing the hose.

Another question I had was why was I never alerted at any point that my coolant level was low? As it is spilling out for who knows how long...

Don't really have an answer to this, my guess would be overheating trumps low coolant, so that's the message that got displayed on the iDrive.

That hose is also pretty small, and looks to be part of the overflow for the reservoir, you may not have lost as much as you think.

If your oil temperature was not too hot, you didn't cause any damage.

The same hose broke on me on my 2012 X3... seems to be really cheap.

At first I got a "low coolant" warning but didn't notice the hose was cracked on the corner.

A few days later I saw coolant on the ground where my vehicle was parked so I inspected more closely and that's when I saw the cracked hose. A new hose is worth 40$ at the BMW dealer so change it ASAP.

Hey! Woudl you look at that, the same hose broke for me. I saw steam coming out of the engine bay then pulled over and noticed coolant all over my shit. But yeah like others said, if your oil temp was steady and it didnt give you any warnings then you're fine man.

The coolants job is to keep the engine cool. If the engine gets hot. Oil gets hot. Not hot oil, no hot engine

At what mileage did this happen to you? Might be worth replacing once and awhile to be safe...

That appears to be the most common place for that line to fail. There have been several posts of that failure. Seems to be getting brittle at that junction probably due to heat cycles. Probably a good scheduled maintenance item to add to the list for around 50K. I know yours occurred earlier and I'm at the extreme without faiilure at 102K.

I'm at 48k, so I think I'll just replace it for peace of mind. Can't be too expensive. Thanks for the info!

Mine failed at around 76k since some of you were curious about mileage. I replaced the hose and filled up the missing coolant and did the bleed procedure. Everything seems to be good now. Drove it about 60 miles to and from work so far with no issues.

It was around $40 at the dealer for the replacement hose. Based on the date stamped on it the one that failed for me was probably the original.

This actually happened to my F36 N55 yesterday. I just hit 66k. I noticed steam/smoke coming from the driver side of the engine bay and immediately pulled over. Coolant sprayed everywhere in the engine bay too. If this happens to you here's what you should know/do
1. (If you can) drive it to the nearest safe location and keep an eye on the temperature gauge for overheating. *250F*>
2. Order the hose online or stop by your local BMW dealership part # 17128570061
3. Replace the hose (super easy diy) just be careful with the clips as they are very small and tough to work with sometimes
4. Top off coolant (50/50mix bmw formula)
5. Bleed coolant system
6. Drive the car and watch for coolant temperature
7. Enjoy your BMW

Good reminder for everybody to change that hose around the 4/50 mark, or just after your factory warranty expires.

I swapped mine last year and it broke in the exact same place as OP while I was removing it. Couldn't tell if the new part is improved or not.
