Gxx M3 and M4
I actually like it.
I’m sure not everyone will agree. Think the new grilles actually complement an overall more aggressive look. Prefer the M4

everyone will say they will get used to it, or it'll grow on them, or they'll like them - because people will be conditioned to. Its the new product, its the marketing, its the buzzwords like 'bold'. It's the fact that it's the only real choice available at this level.
we now see a plethora of youtubers, most of which know nothing about cars, speak of its 'aggressive' and 'fresh' design, because they are basically voluntary marketeers to drive views. That's why they get these products to 'review'. and lets be honest - its the only real choice at this price point. The equivalent C63/RS5 aren't as driver orientated, the C63 is significantly heavier than the outgoing M4 and much pricier. The RS5 is a bit dull. We've not seen a truly elegant car for a decade and everyones got used to these brash designs. Alpina A110 aside. Actually Jaguar did a great job with the Ftype Mark 2, and cleaned up the design. They get it, at least. I think after 10 years of big grills and the trends set by Audi, there's really not much design left on the table if you're simply covering the front in giant grills....so the only logical step will be to back to elegant designs. This BMW will become outdated, very quickly. Will be interesting to see what Merc and Audi come out with in response. i could hire purchase the new M4 if i wanted to, but i personally think its ugly AF and would grimace every time i walked out my front door in the morning. Each to their own! |

I must be in a minority, i love it
Sounds like the Touring will be arriving in 2022 and it will be very high up on my list. Be interesting to see how many of the people that dont like it will be driving one in a couple of years. The same thing happened when the V8 M3/4 was replaced with the 6 pot but the vast majority soon back peddled and got on board. |

It's looking to be a definite no from me and I would have been planning on buying one before I saw the direction of travel and then the reality of it. It is just wrong on so many levels (too ugly, too heavy, too big, too expensive, etc.). Once the xDrive model is out next year you will be able to spec one for over £100k (Ultimate pack, MPE, etc etc...) and I doubt we will see the levels of discounts on it that we have got used to - it will clearly lose £40k of that as soon as you drive it. A 992 will almost certainly be cheaper to own over 3 years. For me the clincher was the rear - I was thinking I may find the front bearable once got accustomed to it (a stretch but felt I could make myself) but the rear with the MPE which I would spec (or it would be a downgrade from my current F80) is just awful:

According to he CARWOW video, they're 160 kg heavier, largely due to additional bracing, but it's more than compensated for by and additional 60 bhp and 100 Nm of torque.

I don't particularly like the nose, but in M3/4 form without the grille surround, it does look less bad. The rest of the shape is actually rather nice. The rear of the M4 looks like an 8 which is no bad thing in my eyes. The interior looks nice, particularly with those optional carbon seats. I know from driving the X3M that the engine is fabulous. All in all a decent car. I'm also fairly confident that the current pricing will be as meaningless as most BMWs - they will have to discount hugely to shift them. I wouldn't rule out an M3 in a year or two.

People keep saying it looks aggressive, but I don't see it. They look bloaty and soft to me. Maybe it's the colours they've used so far throwing me off.

Every other generation of M3 release pictures I've loved, and liked even more after seeing them in the metal. This is the first time I've seen very little that I can pick out from the design that I actually like.
The 3 does look better than the 4, but thats not exactly a compliment. I was delighted to hear about the M3 touring but unless theres a hasty face-lift to fix that front end then I won't be able to bring myself to spend what will be about 80k (with options) on a car that I find so unattractive. If they just gave it the 3 series front end it would improve things massively. There's been quite a bit of a shift in opinions online since the big online bloggers have released their videos complimenting the cars. A lot more people following their opinion that it looks good. Remember that these bloggers aren't going to say what they might really think and slate the styling or they won't be invited back for the next big release. Or get a loan of a nice car to drive round the alps and review for content

And one things for sure, very few M3/M4’s have generated quite as much conversation and widespread publicity. It’ll sell by the bucket load. I like it and I’ve liked the front since the first day I saw the 4 series. Poor deluded, conditioned brain, that I have. |
