Nice - I hadn't seen that. Sounds like we can expect a fleet of M40d models - could add as many as a half dozen or more, if they hit every spot they will with M40i.

This is traveling down the proverbial rabbit hole huh.

It depends how hard BMW hits the baby Ms with.

nobody cares about horsepower. Power to weight and gearing is more important.

The new model will be lighter weight than the M3 CS so even if power and gearing was exactly the same, performance would be significantly improved over current M3

If you want raw power, go buy a Hellcat

Yes, an increase in both performance enhancements and model choices is a plus. But what about the excitement you get from owning/driving an exclusive, performance driven full fledged M vehicle?

I must be honest, as I've never driven a true M car. I'm actually on my second BMW ever (First was a '09 335xi e92, currently '12 335xi e92 Msport), but look forward to one day owning a true M.

But isn't part of the experience knowing that the M cars you strive to drive, tower above a regular BMW model, in performance and looks? What excitement can BMW be generating, when the increase in M variety/flavors is just saying "Yeah this is just slightly better than the lower trim level, but not as good as the next two trim levels above it."

I personally feel like this will dilute the M line. Why not just advance the options for performance and looks within the standard BMW line, while reserving the M title for the true highest end performance versions?
The M line is already diluted, along with every other BMW in the current lineup.

6-7 years ago any BMW you drove provided a fun driving experience even on the slowest models.

Now only the M models provide a hint of that excitement. The M2 comes closest to what the brand used to represent. The current non-m cars are bland shadows of what BMWs of the past were. They are extremely capable cars, but lack emotion provide little dynamic edge over competitors

E36 M3 had redeeming qualities, you know like steering feel, N/A inline 6, nice throttle response, good sound, right dimensions, fairly light weight

Lets hope the G80 M3 is not just a bland german entry level saloon with 500hp and a harsh suspension that is boring to drive. We need some of that BMW magic back

Why pretend to be a shittier version of Audi, when BMW had their own proper identity and that's what made them successful? Why would you buy a BMW when Audi does it originally better and they offer the exact same class' superior product? Van Meel is a moron.

They are simply copying everything about the VAG group's strategy with zero redemption.

Porsche is the perfect example of selling out yet still having a saving grace. They're a SUV automaker now that also has a niche lineup of amazing sports cars that made them successful in the first place. BMW fails to offer that whatsoever. They rehash engines and technology from the previous generation, put some lipstick on it, and pump it out as their best offering. Fuck that shit. If you're going to make M'd out grocery getters everywhere in your portfolio, at least give us a few thrilling, true sports car models ala Porsche's GT-series.

So the line up for the 3,4,5 series will probably be something like

A4?330i
S4?M340i
RS4-M3

A5?430i
S5?M440i
RS5-M4

A6?530i
S6?M550i
RS6-M5

I'm assuming the 440i will only be available in a M440i trim. You will not be able to get a regular 440i like you can now with out M performance it will either be 430i or M440i. Same with M240i, M340i, M550i, M850i etc.. basically if you want more power than a 4 cyl. Car you will have to move up to an M performance model and if that's not enough you will have to go full M. It actually makes a lot of sense Audi does the exact same thing you can not get an A5 with a 6 cyl. Engine you have to move up to the S5.

Price and performance for the 4 will probably look like:

430i—-255hp?-$45k
M440i-380hp?-$65k
M4??—480hp?-$85k

Enough of a gap to keep competition between model versions.

But theyre going to make the i cars into a force to be reckoned with! And self driving cars is a key company goal!

Those types of goals are inconsistent with driving passion...the ultimate bloated and dumbed/numbed down machine is what you get....

It sounds like the M3/4 are going the same way as the new M5 (ZF autos instead)....maybe there’s hope for the M2?

Only the halfwit US version. The Euros got an impossibly bad SMG series one.
Or a 6 speed stick

Textbook brand dilution.

I suppose the older M's will benefit from this digression.

Once BMW switches over to electric and matches Tesla performance, these recent generation "by the numbers" Ms will be nothing special.

I used to look forward to the jump from one generation M5/M3 to the next.

Now, for whatever reason, I don’t feel that attachment to either. An entire generation of the M3/M4 turbo has come and gone and I couldn’t care less.
It was a slide over for turbos to appease environmental restrictions and not a move to grassroots 6 cylinder engines.
The cars seem underwhelmed, the reviews for the cars seem to say they’re underwhelmed then the marketing group slaps on performance packages that should have been on the car in the first place.
Doesn’t everyone remember the anticipation of the e46 from e36 and the e90 from the e46? I’d pick up the magazines and dream of the day I’d get any one of those cars, now I look at the dealership across the street - Porsche.

And for the first time I think the M5 is being compared to the E63 AMG as the benchmark and for the first time I would seriously consider it as a daily.
