hey guys iam on vacation with my family min. 6hrs from any bmw dealer, car is under warranty, check engine light just came on, its orange, ran my scan tool and its a thermostat code. shut car off, and now no check engine light on, called Bmw Canada and they said drive it if you can but I should have it towed at my expense to the nearest dealer. so 6 hrs away. that's a hell of a tow... Can I drive this car and just watch the temp gauge or is it imperitive I park and get that 500 dollar tow.

I mean, they said you could drive it. Have you driven it since and does the temp gauge seem operational? If so, you might be fine to just drive it and watch temps.

Like said above, you're fine to drive, just keep a very close eye on the temp gauge. Anything out of the ordinary pull over and let it cool down for as long as you can, and keep on going like that. Hopefully you won't have to do that, but that's worst case if you can't get to a dealer, unless you want to pay that towing bill

Not sure if it will work properly with the thermostat failing but unlock the hidden menu and monitor the coolant temp page on the cluster

99 times out of 100 a thermostat failure results in the thermostat staying open, not closed, with the result being it takes the car longer to warm up. Keep an eye on the temperature anyway, in case this is that 1 in 100.

I know this isnt helping your current situation but...

I had my coolant thermostat replaced for free at 53k or so. If you are SULEV it will be a free repair, dont let them try to charge you!

Also - agree with Bill above... they are designed to fail open as to not damage the vehicle, you should be fine to drive vehicle back to dealer but pay attention to temps just to be sure.

Didn't know that, that's good info to know. Even more reassurance OP that you're fine just keep an eye out to be sure.

Like most new design of thermostat....it should be open when it break as a fail safe. That what engineer say about it anyway.🤔

They've been that way since the 1930s. Maybe earlier, but that's as old a car as I've worked on.

I had similar issue with CEL.....used my cheapo BT OBD2 reader and was able to pull "P0597" code. Was about to make appointment, but the CEL went away after I drove a few days ... came back for a few days and now it has gone away (and has not come back for about 2 weeks)

I suspect my issue is probably related to the sensor/connection, as the temps were all reading fine when the CEL was on.

I know this isn't the most helpful post, but thought I would still share my experience.

I just fixed my P0597 code at Brian Jessel BMW,

Said thermostat wiring could be corroded and/or the thermostat itself fails.

Replaced at 62k Km and they will check the coolant for leaks too.

You can drive it, but dont push it too hard

Awesome, thanks for the info! If the CEL does come up again, I will def book appointment to get it looked at.

Just wondering.... was it was covered by your factory warranty (assuming your car is still under factory warranty) ?
