Talking DIY - N20 N26 Wastegate Rattle Fix

I bought a used 2013 BMW 320i not too long ago and it was purchased with a boost problem. The turbo made the notorious rattling noise.

While doing a thorough inspection I noticed the flapper arm had too much play inside of the bushing.
So I went ahead and ordered a new flapper kit online to fix the turbo myself.

I figured I'd use the extra money from not having to buy a brand new turbo and put it towards basic maintenance parts to possibly add some go-fast parts later on.

The turbo my car came with was with the old mechanical/vaccum diaphragm wastegate and not the newer electronic wastegate.
You can figure out which turbo you have by visiting this link: HERE

If interested, you can click HERE for the link where I bought the flapper kit.

Tools Required:
  • Grinder
  • Welder
  • Drill

1. Mark flapper position on the manifold for reference later on reinstallation of new one.

2. Grind off weld spot on the flapper and brake it away using pliers.

3. Drill out the lock pin on manifold to unlock bushing.

4. Use a 10mm socket and hammer to punch bushing inside of manifold.

5. Use engine oil to lubricate and press the new bushing into the manifold. Use soft metal, such as an aluminum block, to press it in to spec while constantly inserting the new flapper to see how it would seal.

6. Weld the stopping pin into the manifold to prevent bushing from moving around.

7. Weld the new flapper arm in the same location that was marked in step 1.

I also have a 2013 320i (xdrive) with the noisy flapper.
Oddly, I checked the compatibility in the eBay the link you provided and it says that it's not compatible with my car. Is there really a difference in the turbo between the xdrive and the sport sedan both of which use the same motor ?

As long as you have the older vacuum actuator like I did it would work. I’m assuming the seller just missed your model if it checks out.

How is the flapper now? Any rattle?

Btw, where in PA are you? I would bring my turbo with the kit for you to install it haha
