Wheel Corrosion / Milking - Where do I stand?
Apologies for starting another wheel corrosion thread... here goes.
Like others both my passenger side wheels (442M's) have corrosion / milking around the edges and some near the centre caps. I've been in contact with the dealer about this since I had my car serviced in April. The service department have pushed me towards speaking to the salesman who I got the car of (he has been helpful in this). This is what I recently sent them: Hi ##### I'm good thanks. Hope you are too. I was under the impression that the wheels would get replaced with new ones? This is what the service advisors were hinting at and also a few people I know with the same issue have had there wheels replaced under warranty rather than get repaired. This seems to be a common issue with the diamond cut wheels and many dealers have replaced them free of charge... Few posts online about the same common issue where wheels were replaced under warranty: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/...f=72&t=1702584 http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1411823 http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ight=corrosion Kind Regards ##### This is his reply: Hi there Mr ##### Thanks for the email. I haven't forgotten just swamped with things unfortunately. I have spoken to my manager at length about it and he has advised that we cannot change the wheels for 2 replacements , but I am just waiting for confirmation from our prep centre on getting the wheels sent away to be re polished which will resolve the current problem. If the come back to me that they can do that which I would think they will , the next stage would be to arrange a time for the car to come in and put you in my demo for a few days while the wheels are being done. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards ##### What should I do? Should I go to another dealer and start talking with them instead... or do I just accept the "refurb" and move on (least fav option of mine) If others have had their wheels replaced then surely the same service should be offered to all customers?

It's a manufacturing fault with them, it's not the dealership who replace them it's BMW themselves ! I would go to another dealership, if you car is within warranty period and the alloys have never been damaged they should be changed for new.

If the car is within its original manufacturers warranty then there is normally no quibble at all about replacing the wheels.
Outside of warranty and it's a different matter entirely. If the wheels were going to be refurbed/replaced as part of buying a second hand car I'd personally expect all this to have been completed prior to taking delivery of the car. Like so many of these things you need to have written copies of any discussion to back you up in the your word vs theirs. My experience with sales staff is that with one exception there is little interest on their part once the sale has been completed. |

Like above if its under warranty you should expect new wheels at the least, I had 3 replaced 2 years ago & car is currently at the dealer having a report & video for a goodwill claim for 1 rear wheel....doubt they'll agree but worth a try.

Whatever you do don't get them "re polished" which means re diamond cut, as they will then fail again even quicker! |

I'm half expecting resistance to my third warranty claim on wheels. My approach will be along the lines of...
What is the purpose of diamond cutting alloys? - Purely cosmetic. Good. They look s4it now. ergo, not fit for purpose. Please replace them. |

I had one replaced without any problems and mine was about the same age as yours at the time. If they are a genuine BMW dealer I would insist on a replacement under warranty. If they persist then take it somewhere else. Refurbs are okay if you kerb it yourself (I have one wheel refurbed) but it is never as good as the original.
Are you sure it has not been damaged, causing the corrosion? I see that the second link you mention is the wheel I had replaced. |

No damage to any of the wheels what so ever. I showed the links to the dealer to make my case stronger. I'll see what they say back tomorrow.

My rear o/s 403m is starting to show signs of white worm around the centre cap, pretty much identical age, Oct 16 reg. Bought from Harry Fairbairn in Giffnock - anyone had any experience of warranty claim/replacement with them?

Agree with all said here - this is a warranty decision that BMW make - not a lot to do with the dealer - their role is to simply follow the process and video the wheels and submit to BMW who make the decision - as others have said you should have no issues if there is not too much other damage - mine were just coming up to 3 years old and all replaced with no quibble...

This is 100% a service matter - not sales - as far as I'm aware every dealer will have a warranty specialist who deals with it - the process has changed recently and BMW insist on videos being submitted- decision within a week should be expected...

I got it as an AUC. No signs of any refurb work on them. Initially when I raised this after my service in April, 2 people from the service team went out and took pics etc. It was the following week when I got a call from them telling me I need to speak to the salesman I bought the car through :
I'm going that way at the weekend so I might ring ahead this week and book in an appointment with someone there or even the DP perhaps.

I had mine refurbished in year one. Cooper Reading outsourced to 360 alloys. I was also given the option of picking my own refurbish company. 360 messed a wheel up so I won't use them or Cooper Reading again. The paint was too thick in one of the valve holes so the tyre was leaking air. I had it fixed at my own expense. Even if 360 guarantees their work and I am within warranty.
To be fair the diamond finish has about 3 lives if we're talking corrosion only and not kerb damage. The wheel itself is not faulty. Based on that it is hard to justify a whole new wheel. I rang around after reading Teastons experience and 2 dealerships offered a refurbishment only. Might be worth calling more places. I think it is a cop out for dealers. If a car is within the 3 year warranty the chances are that corrosion will need to be addressed once or twice. So by outsourcing it to companies who provide a one year warranty the dealer washes their hands of a recurrent problem. |
