Bootmod3 - 51 knocks detected in 30 minutes

Starting this thread now that I can make threads. Original comment was in the Bootmod3 General Discussion:

Quote:
Hi all, just joined to ask if this was bad (because it sounds bad to me). I flashed the [93 Stage 1 OTS] tune a month ago but didn’t know to do any logging until recently. I decided to log my drive to work and had 51 knocks detected in the 30 minutes to get there. Here is the link to the data if anybody can help: http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5dae3ecac090c61539d93ebd

For now I have returned to stock tune (still have the BM3 transmission tune on though). The only upgrade I’ve done is the charge pipe. Spark plugs were recently changed (I’m at 62k miles). Ambient temps today were in the 60s
Later came back with stock tune on the same drive, similar ambient temps and it had 34 knocks detected:http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5db0d8bec090c61539d945ad

Just wanted to see if this was normal or not. I did one first to third gear pull in stock tune after reading a reply to me but I'll have to do a better pull tomorrow to get better data. That one pull did have a knock detected however (halfway through first gear)

Car is a 2014 335i with VRSF Charge Pipe running 93 Octane fuel

Any input is appreciated

As i mentioned in the other thread, knock during commute-type driving isn't really cause for concern. The DME is working to optomize fuel economy; AFRs are leaner, load is lower, timing is more advanced, etc.

The knock during WOT pull could be a sign your fuel isnt high enough octane. You can always try a 91 map.

It would also help if you posted your exact car specs (beyond 2014 335i), mods, fuel, etc.

Thanks! I updated the post to contain more info on the car. Unfortunately the pull knock was on stock tune (I'm guessing by default that's for 91 based on the fuel requirements) but I might give Bootmod3 91 map a try

93 Octane from where? Premium ARCO or off-brand is not equal to premium Shell or Chevron. I learned this the hard way.

I (and many others) have to run 91 tune to avoid timing issues despite using 93 gas, apparently gas isn't gas.

I was running 93 from RaceTrac and QT but this last tank I filled from Chevron (1/4 of old gas left though)

Here is the logs with a 4th gear pull and a 1 to 5 gear pull. Unfortunately on both pulls it looks like knock was detected: http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5db4cd20c090c6759f4a1edf

Earlier I tried stock tune 4th gear pull and it had no knocks detected: http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5db4c6fec090c6759f4a1ebd

Unfortunately, looks like I’ll have to give the 91 tune a shot instead. I appreciate your help!

Where knock detection would occur on no load such as regular everyday driving.

I would assume way more "knock" incidents during normal low-load driving compared to WOT. As Jeremy is writing the DME will (read should) ride on the knock threshold to optimize fuel consumption.
