I agree, I've always thought that the Civic is a great first car, it was my second car and it lasted looong, good cheap service from Honda, reliability, cheap parts both for mods and for repairs as you are already thinking what it's most likely to happen, and also it is very safe. And even if you think the 140hp for the EX is too low, then the Si is still a good "not too powerful" option.

I had a 3.0L X3 as my first car and in my opinion its one of the safest cars iv'e drivin. I knew if i were to speed i would roll the car so i didn't even try. I have had the car for about three years and i strongly suggest it for your son. you might even use it occasionally, its so versatile.

My son is getting a Civic for his 16th. What he won't know is for his 18th I'll get him something cool IF he treats and appreciates the Civic well, and can pay for his own insurance and gas.

no really, consider a 323i... not too much power to go wild, but enough to let him have his fair share of fun. but one thing:

is he really mature enough to handle it? consider his group of friends, and where is he in it? is he the one who is easily convinced? because that makes all the difference. he could be in any car and if his friends pressure him to slam on it, if he is stupid enough to give in, it could end horribly. it happened to my best friend back in high school. so just consider these things man.

I'd actually pick the E46 if you have to pick from the big 3 because it's undoubtebly the most reliable of the bunch. But as much as I hate to say it, everyone i've ever met whose first car was a bmw was an absolute prick and a half (e90post youth aside). People who were completely normal before. Weird, mercedes and audi never seem to have the same effect. But the E46 is the smarter buy for you, and the better drive for him. Otherwise, the A4 is a really nice choice. Personally, I think the A4 would be my first choice. It just screams reason.

On a side note, I came from a pretty well off family, and I was probably spoiled beyond reason, but I could never see my father buying me a car older-yet-equivalent of what he was driving. If my kid's driving a 3er, I better be in a P-car of some sorts. Thats for sure. Just kidding you though, keep us posted on your decision. He'll probably be happy with whatever you give him.

I actually agree with BMXtreme; go for the Civic. The new coupes are really nice, and you can get an EX trim model (sunroof, alloy wheels...pretty much the high end trim right beneath the Si) for less than $20k. It has decent power (something like 140bhp), and it looks modern. I think it'd be perfect.

Get him a used 325.....its safe, reliable, and he can't go too fast. Also, make him pay for some of it, or the insurance. Actually, sorry, I have no business telling you how to raise your kid, I was just using my experience as a kid as an indicator: my parents made me pay a little each month from what I earned from my job just to make sure I didn't take the car for granted, thats all.

If you get a used e90 325, it might save you money because you can get extended warranty and maintenance plan so no matter what, you will have no bills other than the monthly payment....just thought
