I actually purchased it from my Local BMW dealer with 24,000 Miles. CPO. I never expected them to jump in and help. But there was an obvious defect with x amount of cars and It just sucks that I was one of them.

So sorry to hear about the problem, OP. Last year when I was looking at used 2-series this is exactly why I refused to consider anything with the N20 engine.

I'm really, really disappointed in BMW for not making the timing issue a recall instead of the lame barely-extended warranty they provide.

I read things like this and weep. So sorry for the OP.

Pop onto the E90 forums and look at the carnage that awaits us F30 owners.
Lovely car and all that but hell fire it needs a decent warranty.

Sorry to hear OP. How often did you change the oil if I may ask? Also, source out an engine from a wrecker one that is 2016+ if possible and get an independent bmw specialist mechanic to install. It will cost half of what the dealership wants.

Longtime lurker on the forums, thought I would share the bad news with everyone. Back in May of 2015, I took ownership of a new to me BMW 328i F30. I have had no issues with the car for 4 Full years! It was my baby and i never beat on it since I have another car to do that in. This car was met to be my daily for many years to come and I was also planning on becoming a loyal BMW customer with hope of getting the wife in a X5 within the next year or so.

Well let's jump into the issue that made my week go to hell. Driving to work approx. 55 MPH. I get the low oil pressure light followed by the Drivetrain malfunction light. I pulled over to the side of the road asap and had it towed to BMW. BMW called today, cause of failure was timing chain which then took the whole motor out. They want $11,000 to replace the motor...... I am super frustrated since I am a year out warranty and currently sit at 107,000 miles. There were absolutely no warning signs which makes me even more upset. As I said i don't beat on the car, i coded it to jump into eco-mode at all times. It rarely comes out of eco-mode and was never modified or tuned.... Other issue, I still owe $9,000 and was planning to either trade in this month for a new BMW or pay off in full due to balloon financing. Still trying to weight in on what to do here.

I do have a case in with BMW USA right now, but highly doubt they are going to cover anything. What pisses me off is that the failure occurred because of the timing chain issue that had an extended warranty.

So currently shit out of luck and kind of stuck in a huge predicament. I babied this car and always serviced it on time. Timing chains shouldn't go like that ever.....

I will keep you all updated, but as of right now. Pretty upset BMW owner. And I understand BMW doesn't owe me anything, but this is some screwed up situation.. Especially since there was an extended warranty for this.

EDIT: BMW USA already got back to me, their not going to cover the car at all.
Didn't BMW extend the warranty on timing chains to 7 years

I believe the warranty extension is 7 years OR 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I actually was changing on 6,000 Mile increments... After my service plan was up. And I don't know if that would be in my best interest to replace the motor even with a used one this car. If you price it out ($5,000 Minimum for an Indy to do a motor swap). I would never see the return.

I think my plan as of right now will be to part it. Would most likely see a better return and only loose like 3 grand.

My next question is, do I buy another BMW or leave the brand hahaha

@IK6SPEED I actually plan on doing that tomorrow. I did fill out the form so we will see what they say when I call the legal firm tomorrow. I will gladly update the progress made there.

Man, I'd be livid. N20 timing chains failing is a known issue with these engines, which BMW is fully aware of, and they are not taking responsibility for -- on a car that only has a little over 100K? Not cool.

So, they want YOU to pay $11,000 for THEIR negligent engineering and deficient testing efforts, which they are fully aware is 100% their fault? Yeah, that would be my last BMW, for sure. There's absolutely no accountability there -- totally unethical.

Yeah and on top of this, I called the sales rep and asked if they could work out a deal with me to get me in a new BMW. straight up told me "I'll give you 500 for the car" like he was helping me out felt like cursing him off, I practically laughed in his face. I could get 10 times that just by parting out the damn car.

The other thing that pisses me off, is that if the timing chain was apart of routine maintenance it would have been done. I have stayed on top of all recommended maintenance.

Did you by chance notice the death whine prior to it dying? According to previous threads, the whine would begin well before it dies. As someone that drives a March/2015 build, it's always in the back of my mind.

Mine had the whine start at around 40k miles, and luckily got the timing chain and the plastic guides replaced about a year ago under warranty. They also saw the valve cover gaskets were leaking and replaced that too. Honestly, if those weren’t replaced, I’d be dumping this car as soon as the CPO warranty ends. That whining sound was very faint when I noticed it in my garage each morning so it could have been easy to miss if I parked outside. I also did oil changes sooner than called for, don’t drive hard, and had auto start/stop disabled. Still had it fail. I think it’s just luck of the draw.

I’m sorry to hear OP. I hope you end up in a much better car when you replace it. Hopefully that law firm has some options for recourse as well.

I couldn't tell, but I don't think it was the same whine that's why I am not to concerned. I'm pretty well versed with cars, this whine was extremity high pitched. Like electrical interference lol.

@Fliplegend No whine what so ever prior to failure.

My N26 blew up in April with 26K miles on it...not related to the timing chain though...fuel injector issue killed it. My only good news was I still had 3 weeks of warranty left thankfully. I never abused the car either. BMW dropped a new reman engine in it but they only warranty the replacement engine for what's left of the factory warranty-so basically 3week warranty lol.

I won't keep this car more than another couple of years maybe (if that long) and we'll see what the trade value is on a replaced engined car...

Sorry to hear OP...

I would ask the dealer for help. BMW needs friendly dealers. I sold my prior car (a 330e) back to BMW and the service manager was a huge help in getting BMW to agree to buy it back. So go to the service manager, or general manager, and see if they will help you negotiate a deal with BMWNA.

I am currently on 125000 miles on my 2012 F30 320d. She's been so dependable but I also worry about the timing chain. I found out mine is the N47d20c engine and BMW got no recall on this engine. My aftermarket warrentee expires in June 2019 and I don't have the extra cash to extend it. Our company will be retrenching staff in July 2019 so this really stresses me.

sorry this happened to you, I'm gonna go big knock on wood here , but all this company are for the money. What is one customer or 1% of there customers. Some unexpected stuff always happens. not all cars created equal. For Ex. I have a 2002 Toyota celica gts with 3 yrs /36k miles warranty, right at 39k miles the heater core blew up water/coolant spill on the interior floor it cost $2600 out of warranty. My Mom Ford 25k miles ,transmission was replace 3 times on warranty, the 3rd time we told Ford we want to return the car because my mom was stranded for 4 hrs in an unsafe area... have to rush there to keep her company. Ford didn't want the car back so we sue under lemon law...got 4 times back the value of the car. Mercedes and Audi the same.

I doubt they will do anything at all.

This is why I like to for go the early model with new engine. I like to think that they always try to sort out bugs in the beginning.

But try to work with the dealer for trade in to a new car. Friend have 2012 535d with 140k miles with catastrophic fuel system failure. I was there and I think he didn't lose much but he lost money on it but not big as $11k engine replacement.

Good luck friend.

N26's registered in participating states have 15yr/150k miles warranty on a long list of parts. Does a reman engine change that coverage?
