You are all making me feel like I'm going to miss out on the right of passage of owning a banger.

Unless you like laying under cars every weekend. You won't miss out on anything.

Or having your wife push you in your Escort XR3i round a round about because you couldn't resist playing with the exposed wires of your dodgy stereo, resulting in a mini fireworks display inside the car....happy days..

Thanks again for all the welcomes.

Have a driving trip around France and Spain organised for August which should be a nice way to christen the car. Loving the old banger stories too.

Wow, what a first car. My first was a Mk 2 escort popular plus 1.3 so you can see how old I am! Took me till my 3rd car to get a Golf GTI (2nd hand of course).

Just read this is your very first car! Wow!

I had a L reg Corsa 1.5td LS which the previous owner has put ABS, power steering and central locking on as optional extras! I put about 100,000 miles on that car over 5 years or so.

Well as first cars go not bad!
However I suspect like me many of us had a first car at 17 so options were more limited!

Welcome! You've come to the right place to learn about what other extras you need that you aren't even aware of yet, ha, ha

Very jealous of your first car. Mine was a 1987 MK2 Fiesta 1.4 Sport that I got for free because it needed £300 worth of welding to get it through its MOT. That ran on 4 Star fuel if you know what that is? After 12 months it needed another £300 worth of welding so it got scrapped to be replaced with a Fiesta RS Turbo

You lucky bugger, mine was a 1983/84 VW Polo that I later discovered had had the fuel tank patched up with some sort of tape which made its way in to the fuel system, absolute piece of sh*t.

Never really learned my lesson, think I had about another 15 before getting my first BM, so congratulations OP for not making my mistakes! Enjoy.

460 here, slow barge, handled like a boat, understeered terribly but the AC and was amazing and the stereo pretty awesome too (460s had large bass units on the rear shelf, 440s didn't) and no one else had anything like it

Ah yes, the 460 was the saloon!

I had Sony Xplod 6x9's on the rear shelf! Also back then I remember when filling up it was 79.9p a litre!

Just found a pic of the beast! 1.8i

Oh I remember 56.9 and that was a couple of years after the 460. I had the 1.8 single point injection. A whole 86hp iirc! Migrated from that to 1.25 mk4 fiesta to Volvo 850 T5 which was the first car I actually bought.

Welcome OP !

I feel really old now, my first car was a 1979 opal kadett (imported Mk1 Astra) with 70hp !! That was in 1986!!

I could only dream of an original 3 series 3 years later and really should have brought and kept the first LHD M3

I was paying 64.9 for 4 star and everyone kept telling me to get it converted to unleaded because I was paying so much more for fuel

1983 was when I passed my test, less than a month after my 17th birthday, worked for Post Office/Royal Mail back then, they had their own instructors and examiners, started learning on the Monday morning, took my test on the following weeks Thursday, job done! And got paid to do it, happy days. Brought down to earth by my first car, Marina 1.3 deluxe in white with brown interior, was my dads but he'd hung it on the tow bar of his mates Triumph 2.5PI, cost me £300 to sort it out. First years insurance, through Swinton, was about £150, wouldn't like to be starting now, being older has some advantages.
