Those are certainly words to live by "Invest before you retire." I started as soon I began my fellowship; at that time it was painful, because I did not make a lot, but it has all paid off. Now it is 529's for education expenses for the kids, while dodging viral Curveballs.
Cheers.

A 401k also lowers your current taxable income while deferring taxes on the amount contributed to your 401k. Does your employer match at all? That's basically a 100% "return" on what they match before earnings through the 401k and tax deferment. A 200% return is nice and all, but over what period of time? If it took a year that's good, if it took 10 then not so much.

It more than doubled over the past year. Over the past 5 it's around 260%. There's no match just 5 percent whether I contribute or not.
