My RFT's are fine until they start to wear after a couple years. The cabin noise right now (4 years on the tires) is starting to get quite high. When they were new, it was very manageable.

I had the same bearing needing swap in the first year of owning the car as well. They called it "rail bearing" being caused when the vehicle is shipped by train, and a needle in the bearing sits against the bearing race with no grease. You get a "arc" from the induced static, destroying the needle.

Bearings damaged during railroad shipment were first discovered during world war II. Heavy materials like tanks had the problem and it was determined that the jarring without bearing rotation squeezed the grease from the contact line between the roller and the race. The failure mode was fretting erosion on that spot on the race and roller.

Thanks for info everyone. I've had my F30 for a few months now and have always thought the road nose was excessive. Almost as loud as my wife's E46 convertible..... well kinda. I'm putting some 403s on with Pilot Sports and guess I'll get the bearings looked at at the same time now.

Run flats and inadequate sound insulation, I'm afraid.
Some RFTs are better than others. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric tyres are regarded by many as the quietest. Not much you can do about the sound deadening unless you're prepared to spend a lot of cash/put in a lot of effort.
