I currently have a 2014 328i m sport and while it's a blast to drive sometimes I am left wanting more. The n20 is a competent engine but it's obvious the 2.0 4cl is already quite stretched at 240hp and I don't think it would deal with mods well. I have driven the car 4K miles since I got it and I have floored it probably 20times in that 4K miles and every time I put pressure on the car I feel serious remorse, I want the car to last 200k+. It's because of this that I am considering getting a used 2007 bmw 335i convertible with the n54 and modifying that car to be fast.and keeping the 328 for daily duty I would get an m3 but I honestly am not ready to spend that much.

Is my idea reasonable? What do y'all think

Lol same situation as me. 228i isn't giving me enough and have been getting buyers remorse. Currently looking at 340i. N54 usually aren't super reliable but it's one hell of an engine. Going b58 route as it's just as easy to make power on it like the n54.

The mods will be fine on the N20, just have to increase the maintenance. If you want a N54 335 as the ‘fun’ car, best to get a MY 09 or 10 as the MY 07 and 08’s had more issues. And why a vert? Extra weight ruins the fun! But as you already know, having a 2nd car means even more maintenance/insurance costs, etc...

I feel blessed to have both a N54 and a N20 so if you can do it, do it. Again, you can still mod the N20, though keep an eye out for maybe another warranty extension on the N20 TC/guides. How many miles on it?

Try adding a charge pipe, FMIC, and Bm3 tune on the n20. These 3 items alone will make a big difference. It's still a 4cyl so keep that in mind.

You will regret it if you get the modified N54. Trust me.

Every time I meet someone new in my 335i, the first question they ask me is what have I done to it. I tell them the engine is stock and they look at me like I have two heads. Like it’s a crime to have a N54 and not do any performance mods.

While the N54 can reach ‘cereal’ numbers, I don’t want to deal with the hassle/issues that comes with it. The way my 335i is, I’m happy with it. Maybe the OP will have good luck

Bootmod3 paired with a catless downpipe and a good exhaust really wake the n20 up in my opinion. Going from stock to stage 2 was really night and day. I can do burnouts, cloudy donuts, launch control etc. can't really ask for a better daily tbh

Keep the N20/N26 car and pick up something older - E36 M3 or similar. Turbo the living snot out of it. I know N54/N55 cars are fun and all, but the $ to modify compared to the older stuff is ridiculous and reliability is a huge question mark.

The N20 is not stretched to make its rated 240 hp. By the way it’s probably 265 at the crank. Plenty of owners have added boost and substantially increased HP reliably. Then again if your goal is 200,000 miles, I’d be judicious in this regard.
