VRSF DP fitment issue

Today I attempted to help my brother in law install a VRSF dp on his MY2014 (prod date 07/13) but wasn't able to complete the install due to the dp turbo side flange being around 1mm larger than the stock one. It wouldn't sit flat on the turbo side, leaving a gap. I've done this same install before on my 2014 xDrive with not fitment issues at all (prod date 04/14)

I tried to sit it flat on the turbo before attaching the mid pipe, tried re aligning, moving it around and even pushing hard but wasn't able to get it to sit flat with the turbo.
He ordered the 4" dp, not sure if he needed the 3.5".

He has contacted vrsf.

Any ideas?

This might sound stupid but did he get the right downpipe, MY2014s you have to pay more attention to production date. I think pre 07/'13 you'll have to get 3.5 flange, anything above 07/'13 it's gonna be 4.0.

It's the correct DP 4.0, his car was built on 07/15/2013 but is EWG.

I think his car needs the 3.5 man, as far as i know anything up to 07/13 still on 3.5. I have a MY2014 aswell, but mine was built on 09/13, so i'll need the 4.0, but his is on 07/13 so he'll need the 3.5.

I have a new catted Evolution Racewerks one that's thermal coated that I can offer you/him at a good deal, if interested. I have a 13 335 and I accidentally ordered the 4" when I needed the 3.5"..

Actually, looks like you might be right. I told him to reach out to vrsf to confirm and get an exchange.

Thanks for the heads up.

07/13 production is a 4.0" DP Spec (at least in theory).. Changeover months are historically hit an miss with BMW.

The F Series (1,2,3,4 Series) N55 cars all share the same downpipe. When first introduced, the downpipes had a 3.5" v-band flange inlet on the turbocharger side. On 07/13, BMW decided to change the downpipe. This new downpipe featured a 4" v-band flange inlet instead. Thus, the previous downpipes are not compatible with the new ones.

Below is the breakdown on which downpipe to chose based on production date:

335i (U.S. Spec) - Up to 07/13 have the old downpipe (BM-EXH007) 3.5"

After 07/13 have the new downpipe (BM-EXH012) 4.0"

435i (U.S. Spec) - All 435i have the new downpipe (BM-EXH012) 4.0"

M235i (U.S. Spec) - All M235i have the new downpipe (BM-EXH012) 4.0"

M135i (European Spec) - Up to 07/13 have the old downpipe (BM-EXH007) 3.5"

After 07/13 have the new downpipe (BM-EXH-012) 4.0"

IF THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS BUILT ON 07/13, IT CAN HAVE EITHER DOWNPIPE. A VIN# CHECK SHOULD VERIFY WHICH DOWNPIPE IT IS. TO BE ABSOLUTELY SURE, A VISUAL INSPECTION NEEDS TO BE DONE. SINCE THE FACTORY PART# ON THE DOWNPIPES ARE DIFFICULT TO SEE, THE BEST WAY TO CHECK IS TO LOOK AT THE PART# ON THE BRACKET HOLDING THE DOWNPIPE. THE OLDER DOWNPIPES HAVE 2 STUDS GOING INTO THE BRACKET AND ATTACHED BY 2 NUTS. THE NEWER DOWNPIPE HAS 1 STUD ON TOP ATTACHED BY A NUT. THE BOTTOM BRACKET IS ATTACHED WITH A BOLT, NOT A NUT.

I've never seen a stock 3.5", this had 1 stud up top and 2 bolts on the bottom. I just checked the numbers on his stock dp and they match the numbers on my stock dp. So yeah, it's the correct DP 4". On the pictures you can see the vrsf flange is about 1mm bigger than the stock. The stock had no play when aligned with the turbo, so I guess this is a problem with the flange.

I swapped my stock DP back in for emission inspection and compared my VRSF DP flange to his brand new VRSF DP and it's indeed 1mm thicker compared to mine.

Maybe it's a different batch or some other reason. Just for the sake of testing I tried to line up his DP to my turbo and it didn't fit as expected.

Let us know what VRSF says, we have never had any fitment issues with their F Chassis N55 downpipes

7/2013 is on the CUSP of the transition period. It can be either 3.5 or 4 in that month.

This car was definitely a 4", I compared his stock dp to my stock and they were the same.
The 4" vrsf dp worked fine on my car.

Today we decided to try again after using a Dremel to shave the extra millimeter from the flange. We were able to complete the install. This is the second time I had to modify a VRSF part to fit properly. The functionality/price of their parts is great but fit and finish is hit or miss.

This is the only response we got so far.

"Hi,
It looks good from the pictures.
You have the 4" downpipe stock and we sent you a 4" downpipe.

Us and VRSF cannot see any issues from the pictures you sent.
it looks like it'll fit fine if puts the clamp on it and tightens it down."

Wrong, it wouldn't fit fine before shaving the extra 1mm from the flange.

I appreciate the post. Was considering a DP to get this weekend as there are tons of black friday sales. I will stay clear from VRSF. Likely choose the CTSturbo route or ER.

Any added performance from the ER offering? It is a larger diameter than the 3.5 from Cts. My N55 F30 is a pre 7/13 build date. Both brands offer the 3.5 for my vehicle but the ER is larger from the infi I have gathered online.

Thanks!

This is the first we're hearing of this issue. This is something we could have easily rectified if we were contacted through the proper channels. In either case any vendor in this thread can confirm that they've sold hundreds if not thousands of our products without issue in the past. In a case where a customer does have an issue, we stand by our product 100% with our lifetime guarantee which is something most brands do not offer.

If you haven't done so already, please contact us directly and I'll be more than happy to get you taken care of
